Been 5 years since hittin the lanes dont know were to begin
« on: February 29, 2004, 03:47:21 AM »
Hello,

I'm not exactly a begeiner, but after a recent visit to a local Brunswick lanes after not bowling in 5 years I feel like one.

I have two old Balls A 16# Roto Grenade (Urethane) and an old Poly 12# Ebonite Maxim. The 16# just seems so heavy any more and the 12# I was lofting.

These lanes were synthetic, and were fairly oily. I couldn't get either ball to hook.

I think I want to get a new Ball but I don't know what to get. I dont know if I should go reactive, if so to what degree of hook. Also Im still using conventional drill. I have never made the move to grips, now should be a good time right?

Worse yet I was using lane shoes. I have looked high and low and can not find shoes in a wide width any suggestions?

Thanks in advance to any help anyone can supply

Regards,
Dennis

Well I have looked around at different balls. I am really confused on all the different ways to drill the ball(Pin, weight, position etc...) I really do not know how to ask for my ball to drilled when I get one. So far I have narrowed my choices to

- Brunswick Groove
- Roto Sonic Boom
- Hammer Sharp Blade

I dont know if I should start cheap IE: the Brunswick ball, get the feel for reactive and find the way I like the ball drilled out. Or if I should spend a few extra dollars and get a better ball.

pcfabix -- Linds (www.linds.com) makes a good variety of shoes in E and EE widths.  You will probably have to order them through a pro shop.  --  JohnP

Sonic Boom or possibly a Power Groove.  You could get a proactive Power Groove and a pearl both for cheaper than a single high performance ball would cost you, and still get pretty good performance.  As far as weight, I'd say 15 or 14.

Ok,

So looks like I may go with the Sonic Boom.  Now comes the question...Drilling...I don't even have a Pro Shop I go to. I live in South Florida so it shouldn't be to hard to find one, There is Sawgrass Lanes, Don Carters in Tamarac, etc.. but I really wouldn't know how to ask for the ball to be drilled. Any recomendations for a starting point?

Thanks again for the suggestions thus far.

Talk to whoever is running the pro-shop you go to, and tell them what you want the ball to do, they should be able to help you out. And second, throwing conventional makes it alot harder to hook the ball (in my opinion), so I would go with a cheaper ball, like a power groove, and get it drilled finger tip, you can always plug the fingers and have them moved down to conventional style.

Buddies?  Is that an online retailer?

Also would ya'll recomend buying a ball online and having a pro shop drill the ball?  My last ball the Roto Gernade I bought at a Pro Shop and had drilled there.

Thanks

pcfabix -- Consider the Ebonite Tornado TPS, a low end low load particle ball.  I've sold a lot of these to bowlers that want to move up without breaking their budget, and all have been satisfied.  You should be able to get one out the door of a pro shop for less than $100.  I agree you should move up to a fingertip grip if you are at all serious about the game.  Grips are strictly a matter of personal preference.  Myself, I like the feel of the hole without the soft grip.  A good drill layout for moving to a fingertip grip is with the center of gravity near the grip center and the pin above or to the side of the fingers.  Good luck, and let us know what you decide to do and how it works out.  --  JohnP

There are a number of low end balls that will be great starters and still have use once you progress past the starter point... Storms's Hit line, Ebonite Tornado, Columbia Scout, Brunswick Power Groove are all great starters.

Also, so to a proshop for right now -- you need to have the weight checked since you are all over the place with a 16# and a 12#.  Your proshop guy should not talk you into a mid or higher-end ball, but if he does know that those listed are all you really need right now.  Developing a good relationship with your proshop guy is always helpful.  Later, if you want to try different types of balls, you can get some great used ones from the people here.  I've gotten 3-4 myself just to try out different brands.

As for the drilling, fingertip is the way to go if you want to elevate you game and it really is not that hard to get used to.  I did it after only 3 months of bowling. The drilling pattern will probably be very basic like a label drilling or a label leverage.  No need to experiment with different drilling patterns until you understand the basics.

Most of all, have fun.  Get a few lessons if you can.  Ask the proshop guy.  Watch good bowlers to see things like different ways to hold a ball, the arm swing, the approach steps, the position of the release, maintaining balance, etc.  Too many people just watch the ball... the ball goes the way you release it.

Well I went to the Pro Shop at Don Carters over the weekend. I think Im even more confused now....

I asked about the Power Groove was told they don't have the ball but they have other Mid range balls or could order it. Then I explained my current Ball situation (Roto Gernade) from the look you would think I was discussing a 70's Rubber Ebonite.

Didn't get much help with deciding on what weight might be good. I advised them I was lofting 12#'s and not getting much speed with 16#

Then all of a sudden they find a Power Curve in the back and it's 14#'s (Ice blue) Out the Door with Finger tip grips should be around $120

Do ya'll think I should go ahead and purchase this ball, or should I ask for a lil more help maybe some lane time to show how I bowl?

Thanks
Dennis

I think it would pay to shop around if you have several shops in the area. Now that were getting close to the end of the fall/winter season, shops should be having closeout sales to clear out their stock. All 3 choices would be good for someone starting back to bowling, and get it drilled fingertip and use the summer to get acclimated to them.If you still have trouble, then plug and redrill. As far as shoes with wide widths, for not a lot of money you can get dexter rocky2's in wide width for less than $40.00 .Hope this helps...

Well I decided to go with the Power Groove 14# 2.7oz top weight 3"pin drilled with the pin right below the finger tip.

The lanes were to busy with leagues tonight so the Pro shop owner was unable to watch me throw a few frames. I explained I bowl the last wood to the right(medium rpm) ride the gutter to the back end and looking to hook there. He said from my description the drill he did is exactly what I need.

I got the ball back tonight but haven't had a chance to throw it yet, hopefully this weekend. Really looking forward to it
