Title: Beginner Bowling Ball Selection
Post by: kgreer on January 06, 2016, 10:57:50 AM
I have seen a couple of post on what ball to pick from but thought I would ask again.
I have been bowling in a league for over four months now and really enjoying it.  I have been using a hand me down ball and averaging around 136.  I am trying to figure out the hook but I don't think the ball will react.  I am wanting to purchase my own ball, but with all these options I am not sure what one.  I looked at the Strike King, but not sure.  Any advice would be appreciated.  In the town I live in we don't really have a Pro Shop to help me out.

Thanks in advanced.

I have used the Cyclone and it's an excellent starting ball. Takes well to cover changes and polish if needed.

Also heard good things about the Strike King, so its a toss up IMHO.

Was your hand-me-down ball drilled for you?  If so and it is not reacting, have you tried adjusting the surface and cleaning and de-oiling it?  It may also be that you don't have a good release to get a decent hook out of the ball.  If that is the case, spending more money on a new ball would be a waste at this point and would be better spent on lessons first and then a ball.

Thanks for the response.  The current ball was not drilled to my fingers.  I had to actually have the Thumb drilled bigger to make it work.  I know I have a lot of work on my form, but was hoping to get a ball that the holes are setup for my hand.

Either should give you what you are looking for.

About any company entry level pieces are good. I use the Radical Rack Attack, but that is not on your list.

Staffers will try to push their brand, so a lot of the answers may be biased. Pick a color or style and go with it.

Either. I've only seem the Strike King. The old woman in the club uses it. She's not a starter, but her arm isn't being nice to her anymore so, and it just weighs 12 pounds.
She throws pretty straight and slow, she gets a few strikes with it.
(Throws it on the second mark to the right, most of the time)

While you're bowling with the one you choose. Study how you bowl.
Do some research on Stroker, Tweener and Cranker. Styles of bowling.
Stroker, which I am, throws the ball straight and with little hook. I throw the ball at around 13 mph/20-21 kmh.
You could always record yourself bowl later, then post it on here for more help. I also recommend becoming a member of the facebook group Bowlers Uniting, if you got an FB profile.

The PSO I go to recommended me the Roto Grip Sinister as my first ball, I had been bowling with a hand me down Slingshot. Got it from the old woman using the Strike King.
So maybe the Roto Grip Menace would be a good starter ball too. The Menace is Sinister 2.0.
RG say the Menace fits any style.
