CSI Hypower equivalent
« on: March 10, 2017, 02:13:15 PM »
Hey folks,
First Post. If I'm in the wrong spot just tell me...

I've gotten back into bowling after a hiatus because of a hand injury that had me out for quite a while. I've converted to 2 handed bowling, as it allows be to not worry about my thumb being hurt again and me to wear a brace, for just in case.

I'm bowling in a handicap league with some people that I used to work with. After a 35 week league and now almost done with another I've decided to replace my old CSI Hypower (blue) with something a little more modern. Before I start my next one.

Currently I'm bowing on a medium and medium-dry lanes, standing at the center dot (board 19-20) hitting arrow 2 to strike. I want to keep bowling on the right side of the lane and not go though the oil in the center. Speed: about 15mph with my 15lbs ball. Rev Rate: no clue (medium/high?). Whatever I decide I'm thinking about going down to 14lbs Average: 185-ish.

My pro shop guys recommended getting a urethane ball. Something like a Pitch Black, Pitch Blue, Hammer Black Urethane, Hammer Blue Urethane etc. What are your thoughts? Which one would be comparable to the Hypower. Others that might be in the mix?

I am having a spare ball drilled, should be ready tomorrow, if that makes a difference.

Thank you very much!

Welcome!

I wouldn't personally get a urethane as my first and only ball into modern equipment. It would probably be close to the CSI ball from what little I gathered online about it. But, I would go reactive resin.

My thoughts would be a smooth reactive ball and build out from there. Storm IQ Tour, 900 Global X, Storm Match Solid, Motiv Venom Shock. Something along these lines I would think would help you transition to reactive.

PhysiX
Code X
Code Black
Axiom Pearl
Phaze III
Trend
IQ Tour

which brands does your pro shop stock? I'm sure they carry Storm, Roto Grip, Ebonite, Columbia, Track and Hammer.  But do they carry anything else?

 Which urethane would be closest?

Why reactive resin? Pro shop didn't even mention it when I said I wanted something similar they specifically mentioned Urethane. Would i still have the forgiving nature of a Urethane playing on the right?

All those including motiv, DV8 and Radical.

I'd agree with the X, but if you're going to be on medium dry, I'd agree with urethane. The CSI stuff was very smooth. Blue Hammer polishes up easily too.

Why do you guys believe that the 900 global X is a good choice? What urethane would you suggest?

Thanks again for the help.

If you want a urethane ball, then, by all means, get you one, but know this: In todays modern game, urethane is greatly limited in its performance abilities by the modern "oils" they use today. The conditioners are slicker than ever, and urethane usually just doesn't do to well against them for league bowlers.

The old Blue Hammer I used on "oily" conditions in 1993, I now use on only conditions thought of as "dry", because it just won't handle much if what is out there now.

Remembering what little I do about the CSI stuff, and seeing the newer "oils" effect on the ball, I wouls say go with a strong urethane. Probably the new Black Hammer, or the Storm Pitch Black.

There is another option out there though, but it can be tricky to come scross, and that us the Visionary brands ball named the Crow. It is a strong urethane, with a stronger than usual core for a urethane ball. It is made by the people who owned Faball (maker if the ORIGINAL Hammer balls) before Ebonite bought out the Hammer name and started making them.

Visionary is a top notch, mostly overlooked company, that turns out lots if great stuff.

As a two hander it should be very easy to find a ball that you can get your fingers into to try.  Much easier than somebody that uses their thumb.  Ask around in the pro shop and the people you bowl with to throw some newer balls so you have an idea of the type of reaction you'd like to see.

The X is a very smooth reacting resin ball, but it still is resin. If I would choose a urethane ball for you, it would be a blue Hammer, or even a purple pearl urethane Hammer. They're not going to get your feet left of 20 very much. Reason I say blue or purple pearl is because dull urethane might be difficult to get thru the heads if they get dry.

The only reason I said Urethane is that's what the pro shop recommended based on what type of ball I have. I understand it may for not be the best for conditions today. What would be a better option? Suggestions?

A friend called me last night said he has a Roto grip grenade, similar to my CSI?

I'll check out the X a little more

Thanks
