Gripping problems (wrist?)
« on: August 10, 2007, 05:25:47 AM »
Ok I am having some problems with my throw. the ball doesnt seam to have a smooth spin more of an end over end spin with a light back end turn. so heres a break down of my throw. I know my wrist is breaking and that a brace would help which one would be better. another thing is that my pointer finger has a tendency to curl under. my ball is a hammer no mercy beat'n and help would be great.

My release doesn't feel natural to me, I feel like I kinda force it. And right now I'm getting more forward rotation than side rotation. I think I need to move my hand around the ball a little more. I'm getting pretty low revs too. Wonder if we are having a similar problem.

sounds similar as far as the ball rolling the same way.

I think it would help a lot if you can get us a video of you bowling.  It's hard to really know what you are doing without seeing it.

Do not try and force your release. Make sure your fit is snug enough that you do not have to squeeze the ball. The use of 1 to 3 pieces of white course tape in the front of the thumb hole should give you a comfortable grip without squeezing. If you have still have space in your thumb hole then fill that in the back of the hole with a slicker tape. Once you have a comfortable non squeezing relaxed grip you can go onto the release. Keep your hand / fingers behind the ball. Imagine the old clock with your middle two fingers set around 5 to 6 o'clock (right handers). Set your self in motion with a nice relaxed swing. Wait for the ball to drop from your backswing and do not force it or pull it forward. When the ball gets to its lowest point in your swing that is when you want to start your hand action. Do all your motion with your hand / wrist and do not involve your arm. The release will be like a twisting / turning motion with your hand. Try to keep your wrist relaxed but do not let your wrist break backwards. You want your finger tips to be equal to the equator of the ball or below the equator if you have the strength or technique to do so. When the ball is at its lowest point in the forward swing just slightly rotate your fingers so they end up around the side of the ball. You want to make sure your thumb relaxes and comes out first and then you can transfer your effort on to the pads of your fingers. Allow your fingers to move around the ball and have the fingers stop at approximately 3:00 o'clock on the clock face. Do not try to force it or over turn it. If your fingers go past 3 o'clock you will move your fingers closer to the top of the ball and cause more of a spinning motion. The key is to releaee the ball on the out swing and not the up swing. Do not exagerate the turn of your hand in the beginning. Get used to an effortless release and still try to not include muscle or extra effort from other parts of your body. Think of the twisting motion of your hand as if you were unscrewing the top of a large mouth jar with the jar on its side. Or envision the turning motion of your hand when you turn a door knob. Always maintain your balance and do not give up accuracy. Fool around with different starting positions other than the 5 to 6 o'clock set up. Make sure you do not start to turn to early. Wait for the ball near the bottom of your swing to start the turning motion. Make sure your thumb does not go past 12 o'clock and your fingers do not go past 3 o'clock. that will be your stop point in the turn.
Take it slow from the start. Hope that helps you out.

it sounds like you need to get a coach/pro shop guy to watch you bowl and give you some sound fundamentals to help you with your span/grip of the ball.

Another thing that might occur is simple ball rollout.

The NMB is a pretty aggressive piece, and even with a weak release the ball might not find out enough oil on the lane to work properly - it bleeds its energy prematurely and simply rolls into the pins like a wet donut. This might also depend on the release and other factors like the drilling, but besides a release problem you might also be a "victim" of high end coverstock technology. Make sure to use the ball on longer and soupier patterns - a typical summertime THS (esp. if not freshly made) could just be too little oil and too much friction.

Just my additional 2 cents.

but if his index finger is curling, then there's a problem with his grip/span.
do you have it drilled conventional or fingertip?
