Revs: Technique or Strength?

Title says it all.  I do realize its a combo of both but just wondering what experienced bowlers think about this subject.  Can a smaller framed, somewhat newbie bowler be taught a 400+ rev rate?

Started bowling a year ago, am very obsessed with getting more revs.
Started out as a stroker, but I can't resist the temptation to learn to crank.
Average is about 160 now with my half assed cranking.
Used to be 180 before I started trying to crank.
 
Whenever I try to muscle the ball to get more revs, I'm only able to give it forward roll.
Has anyone experienced the same problem?
How does a cranker release really work?

Ilovegm...before you become too pre-occupied with all those revs and cranking the ball,talk to Robert Smith!!!cranking will affect your bowling longevity if you dont be careful and you dont take care of yor body!!!once the damage is done....it cant be reversed....!!!!being a stroker aint glamorous but it will allow you to bowl alot long then some of those players that crank the ball!!!!


Go hard or go home!!!!!Bowl your best...ALWAYS!!!

Second that. If high revs do not come naturally, do not force it. It takes IMHO some time a training to develop a sound technique that allows you a consistent game with extra revs, putting emphasis on a consistent game. I also fell for the revs trap when I started bowling, and it was hard to accept that a cranker game with a wide hook is not "my game". I even hurt myself and had to stop playing several weeks.

Besides, any extra muscle influx is a potential source of deviation and error in your game - as you experience directly. Stay calm and keep your game simple and sound, and learn to accept that not everyone can play with high revs. Many try to, but look foolish, and sacrifice wood and consistency for a kind of macho self image.

Revs with ball speed matched is more important to me than being rev dominant.  I'd almost rather be speed dominant than rev dominant.  Match them up and you are looking at many great abilties to bowl well.  That along with establishing some good base point stats.
