How would you feel if.....
« on: November 12, 2007, 11:27:42 PM »
You managed to throw 6-8 strikes mixed with some spares in a game and yet someone ( a senior bowler who also struggles with the lanes) tells you that your timing is off even when you hit the pocket and strike?

Plus, he also insisted you to play the big swing out hook in every oil condition (light to heavy)the same way as he is when you are comfortable playing your normal A-B game (for ex, down and in or small swing out shot depending on oil conditions and length). His average is only 5-10 pin more than you.

So, what's your opinion?

Depends on the senior bowler. If you know this person had the capability, but can't quite physically do it like he used to, you might want to listen. Not all the best coaches are the best bowlers.

Personally I would listen to him in reference to my timing, you can't watch yourself bowl unless your taping your self he might see something you can't.

In reference to him insisting that I play a big swing out hook on every condition....I'd listen and ask him whats his logic behind it. I'd pick his brain and if it sounds illogical then discard what he said, if it does sound logical try it.

Bowling is about what the bowler believes it to be, so what is bowling to you friend?

It would depend on who the advice is coming from.  I'm very particular about who I listen to, so if one of the guys I don't listen to then I would just be polite, listen and then go about my business.

I coach on Saturday mornings and one of things that is hard for the kids to understand is that even though they are striking, they still might not be throwing the ball well.  If they are striking they don't see the need to change.  Well, when you're throwing the ball well (correctly) it becomes easier for you to repeat shots so your scores will go up.

A person could have been a great bowler and average 135 now cuz they still like the game.  Most just want to help.

Plus just cuz you have 6-8 strikes...does that mean they were all in the hole or good balls on same trajectory?  You could be scoring but not in time or other technical flaws.

Give the old timer a break...you'll be one some day too.

Tommy Lasorda, Tony LaRussa, Dave Duncan, etc.., were not great baseball players, but they know what other players are doing or not doing correctly.  The old guy may be wrong, then again he may be right, or he just might be another lunatic....... Well, you get K-Dawg, Scotts & my point.

My question to you is do you realize that house blended oil paterns often allow the bowler to miss their mark 3 - 4 boards left and right of their intended target and still hit the pocket.

This is called a combination of the oil pattern, often called, "The Great Wall of China" and outrageously good luck.

It has not one solitary blessed thing to do with bowling or executing well, which is what should be strived for.

Having the right ball, playing the right line (target + breakpoint) and using the right release, can result in great scores even if you're bowling like utter crap, which the old guy pointed out to you. He was not very polite about about it or very good about it because he did not explain it in detail. So much so that you had to ask here. I hope you now realize what he said and why he said it.

Regarding his suggesting you throw a big hook at everything - he's full of horse manure.

I appreciate all the opinions given here. My conclusion is to take and try any given advice. What worked for me, I noted and use, but if it doesnt work then I just ignored it. I cant force myself to imitate every other bowlers ability.

Charlest, I do agreed with your opinion about throwing big hook thing.

I'm just a bit cautious with the given advice coz there this trend among some bowlers in my area to disrupt/ruin the mental/physical game of any new potential bowlers. Some of them are afraid if you rise to the top and win the most of the Tourney here. Its a really pathetic effort.

Thanks again for the opinions guys.
