What's the difference between the regular round hole inserts and the inserts that come with a flat edge where your fingers grip?

The flat edge adds 1/8 to 1/4 forward pitch to the drilled hole's pitch.  --  JohnP

the flat edge is called a lift.  generally you will come out of the ball a little faster and with the ovals.  i had problems with loft and holding the ball too long.  changed to ovals and loved them and my release was much better.
