New to throwing a hook. HELP!!
« on: August 31, 2006, 01:26:23 PM »
I just bought an absolute Inferno thinking I could walk right out and throw a hook like you see on TV, well was that a rude awaking.

I am 34 and have about a 175 average and have always threw a straight ball. I have it drill for my full fingers. I bowl rather hard, not that I try to but when my ball hits the pins they fly.

I have only bowl 2 games wirh it and I felt stupid. Here I come walking up with two balls looking like I should be able to bowl and get this I got a 74 and 82. Go ahead and laugh, after I left a few hours later I was laughing too.

So after all this can ANYONE help me determine how to throw a hook? Did I buy an ok ball? What am I doing wrong?

Thanks

Well you got one thing right. You bought a quality ball. It appears you may have not drilled it correctly (full fingers). You want a fingertip drilled ball to help with rotation. After you re-drill try throwing it again and then re-post if you have no luck with it.

It is next to impossible to help with this problem without seeing you in person.  Ask around, especially to the better bowlers in your area, about a good coach.  A few lessons will be the best investment you can make in your game.  --  JohnP

I agree with JohnP, find yourself a good coach. They will help you break the game down into different steps. STANDING & HOLDING THE BALL, YOUR APPRAOCH, SLIDE, BACK SWING & FOLLOW THROUGH, HAND POSITION & RELEASE POINT. Now a good coach will not throw all of this on you at once. They will slowly work with you on each item until you feel comfortable. But one big thing that I can say is, SPEED KILLS. not saying you have to slow down to a crawl, but throwing it 20mph will not help the weight block. The ball that you bought will hook, you just need to give it a chance. But find some bowlers that average in the 190's and talk to them. Watch them bowl and see what they are doing. The PRO's have been throwling their ball that way for years. But most PRO's can adjust to what the lane is giving them, they do not wait for the lane to adjust to them. But do not get upset, just keep rolling and it will come to you. You have to start somewhere, why not at the beginning.
