muscling the ball/ball reaction
« on: September 01, 2007, 02:26:19 PM »
Lately i seem to have the problem of muscling the ball downward on the swing, which is killing my accuracy and my ball reaction.  I try to relax my hand and arm during the shot, but when i do, i cant get anything out of the ball (ie, doesnt hook, has no power, etc), or i try accelerating through the bottom of the shot a little bit, but thats where i get my accuracy and ball reaction killed.  So I post this to ask a question....being a player with a high track, and med to low revs, and coming out of the ball flat (ie letting the ball do the work by giving it alot of lift off the hand and bringing my hand straight up the back of the ball) are there any techniques i can use to make my swing free flowing yet still get reaction out of the ball without fighting too hard?

Concentrate on a firm wrist, and let anything else (pendulum) be ruled by gravity. If you feel forced to muscle the swing, chances are high that you might have fast feet or a general timing problem, being too early at the foul line for the ball.
You do not need muscle for a good ball reaction. Most importnat thing is good timing and a thumb that leaves the ball at the slide foot's ankle area with a fingertip drilling. Then you just stay behind the ball with the hand and let it roll from your fingertips, following through with your hand. I know it sounds simple, but that's it. It is just quite difficult to have the trust that the ball will hook by itself - beginners tend to "steer" the ball or try to add extra revs with weird hand rotations and ectra effort. But that's not necessary. Relax, let the swing dicate you feet focus on the release. The rest comes by mother nature and her secret agents "gravity" and physics

Hope this helsp a bit?
