Title: new ball for wife
Post by: Albright on May 21, 2017, 05:05:38 PM
My wife is trying to learn how to throw a hook should she get a aggressive ball so the ball can do most of the work if so what ball any suggestions would help want to get her the right ball.

I'd suggest a mid price ball, probably a pearl, and definitely one with a symmetrical core that would be more forgiving as she learns to release more consistently. Here are a few that I know about:

Brunswick - Edge pearl, Fanatic pearl
DV8 - Diva Style, Freakshow pearl
Radical - Jackpot pearl, Cyclops

Good luck to you.  Feel free to message me if I can help further with layout ideas, etc.

Look at the AMF Xcites. Less flippy than the Boosts and rolls really well. Don't be afraid to knock the polish off.

A layout doesn't help a ball hook, that comes from her release. If she's serious about trying to improve not just bowl for fun then she should look into some lessons

Getting lessons from a reputable coach is a great way to start.

In addition to the coaching advice above, I prefer fairly strong layouts for beginning bowlers.

It's difficult to know for us here in the forum without watching her roll the ball in person, but a good pro shop guy can measure her PAP and recommend a layout.

I disagree.  Yes, the release is much more important than the layout.  But the layout does determine the percentage of track flare that is realized.  And that percentage determines whether the ball is rolling over fresh coverstock or oil for much of its travel.  --  JohnP
