I used to bowl years ago (about 2002) and I fell off until about 2006.. then fell off again until about 2 weeks ago a friend invited me to bowl with him on his birthday, this time I want to stick with it.. My ball I have is pretty basic it's a Ebonite Cats Eye it's a good spare ball but I' having a issue trying to remember when putting the fingers in the ball do I inset the fingers all the way in the hole? I noticed my knuckles are a lot bigger so I can't really do so anymore without the ball getting hung up on releasing.
Because of the bowling with him was a last min thing I ended up using one of the house balls But I'm very serious about wanting to get back into it as he wants me to join him in the winter league I more certainly want to work on my game first before joining since I was only getting around 82-89 after 2 games.
Now that brings me to another question I plan to pick up another ball soon but not sure what I should be looking for, where I went the lane was pretty avg as far as the amount of oil put down, right now my goals are to work on my follow through and learning to release my thumb first and hook.. but the thumb part like I said and the holes in the ball in general need to be a bit bigger.
The ball might be a little too light for me to use now as well, last time I bowled with it my speed was about 26 mph and I ended up blowing pins up the gutter twice and causing someone to come out and to throw them back in the pit, I'm thinking about 14 lbs might be right for me.

Go to a pro shop. They can help you better than we can
-
As far as the drilling you mean?
-
For everything. They can show you what to do better than we can in words. If for some reason you don't agree with their advice then come here for a 2nd opinion or go to a different pro shop

Great advice. I would consider some lessons from a certified coach as well. Many times the pro shop will be able to provide that service as well.
As far as finding a good pro shop in your area, I would suggest talking to some higher average bowlers in the house you plan on bowling in. usually all you need to do is ask where they get their stuff drilled and they will tell you and why.
I am fortunate in the shop I frequent will give a free lesson with a ball purchase. It's an extra incentive that I feel a lot of shops are missing out on. All else being equal, wouldn't you like to get one on one time with a coach?

Buddies is about as good as a place you can go to. Really no need to come on here

Top advice. The pro shop operator will watch you bowl a few frames and will suggest a ball that fits your style in terms of weight, layout, etc. Bring all the questions in your initial post to your local pro.
Good luck.

I bowled a few games today with my own ball and it's time to step up, after my 3 games I stopped over at the pro shop and I asked him about the fingers and he said the holes were correct but the angle may not always be the same as you grow older, and also the ball is too light now which I already knew.
But it was a horrible 3 games.. I may do Sunday evening instead of trying to squeeze in between the 1-5 for the $3.50 a game
The lanes had little to no oil, and I got some pretty deep kicks on my ball.
He suggested some balls within the same level as my current ball like the Brunswick Tzone and Columbia White dot
I guess I should start with a heavier spare before moving on to getting a second ball for different lane conditions? I notice most bowlers all have finger insets now, I should be seeing my friend this evening and he should tell me a bit more on how he likes it as far as feel.
I most certainly want a ball I can grow with

Don't try something based on something your friend feels as it may feel completely different for you. The only way for you to know if you'll like something like inserts is to try them
-
Well that is true, I'm going to do a bit of reviews before I buy my next ball, I have faith in buddies and ball drilling.
-
I have a question, on the buddies website is all that stuff in the store or is the stuff listed on the site is for internet only? Because I planned to stop in tomorrow to get some shoes and a ball.
-
I don't know for sure having never been there but they should have most stuff in store as well. You could always call first
-
Yeah I called and they did not have it I did find another shop that did, the guy turned out to be really cool and it sad that the whole bolmorAMF deal is pretty much kicking him out because he does not fit in with the new model.

I plan on working on what I was doing before but this time with a ball with more weight and fits me better and I do need a bowling towel and some new shoes for sure
