« on: June 25, 2005, 03:50:56 PM »
Being new to bowling and I would like to know what difference does it make if the pin is 2"-3" or 4"-5"? And also reading your postings,I'm trying to understand what is the the difference in pin placement if it is over the fingers, under the fingers or on the side of the fingers help me understand.

Thanks

Pin above finger foles: ball will skid longer. Good for dry to medium conditions.
Pin below finger holes: ball will break and roll earlier, better suited for oily conditions
Pin outside of finger holes (to the righ for righties): sharper reaction, gives a nice combo with pin above finger holes layout.
Additionally, an X-hole can influnece the reaction or can be used to fine-tune. It might also be necessary to make balls with a strong pin placement outside of the finger holes legal.

Besides, the distance pin to CG is something different, determining the distance between the actual top of the core (which the pin marks) to the center of gravity, the point from which all the ball weights are equally distributed. Pin-out distance can give you insights on how the ball might react when drilled properly. Check out other posts in this forum or the brilliant FAQ section.
