Title: Practice Games
Post by: canesrock82 on April 27, 2007, 06:32:55 PM
What is the norm for everyone when you go practice how many games do you throw?

I have been doing 3 on a normal practice night and tonight I threw 5.

Started crappy, 140 and a 138, then I started doing better. Next 3 were 190, 202, and a 179. Last game they went cosmic on my 6th frame or I would have been over 200 again.

Because everything is different when practicing, under normal circumstances, it is distracting and serves no purpose to keep score.

When practicing, one normally practices 1 or 2 things during practice. One method is to shoot either 7 pins or 10 pins on the first ball and then shoot your strike ball on the 2nd ball. The idea of shooting to the 7 or the 10 is to make sure you hit ONLY that pin. This leaves you most of the rack with which to shoot your strike ball, practicing, maybe ... release and speed consistency or target hitting consistency.

If I'm really practcing something, I'll bowl 8 - 12 games.

If I'm there for a refresher, to just keep timing and feel because of too many days off in between bowling occasions, I'll bowl 4 - 6 games.

My practice session are generally 6 - 8 games.

What I practice depends on what I feel is the weak link in my game.  This weekend there will be a ton of 7 pin practice.  I couldn't pick up a 7 pin during my 9 PM league Wednesday and it cost my team the last game and kept me from shooting 600+.  I had 6 opens total 4 of them 7 pins and 3 of those in the last game

I keep the scoring on just to keep track of the number of games so I am sure I can pay for them .  I do not look at the score, it doesn't matter.

7 games every other day, the first game all I concentrate on is getting my feet and arm going together. Then I keep score for 4 games and then all I do is throw at 10 pins ( i really hate that pin)

anywhere from 6 to 12 games almost 3 times in a week. so for one week theres about anywhere from 18-30 something games of practice.

charlest is correct again,he's a plethera of great information!!! I do the same thing 7or10 pin first ball and strike shot second ball. Only go with one or two things which you would like to work on till you get thoose issues corrected then move on. It's a game of consistancy so it takes patience and practice. Don't worry about your practice scores they don't mean doodly squat.

usually. . .10-20 games.
I dont know about anybody else, but usually 5-7 of the games are "Low Pin" games. You wan the lowest score possible. If you gutter, it counts as a strike(on first ball) or a spare(on second ball). Therefore, a perfect game is 20.
It makes you very accurate on your 10 and 7 pins.

But I also only have to pay 50 cents a game since I work there. . .

I HATE COSMIC BOWLING!!!!!!!!!  I had to deal with some guy having a birthday party next to us so they put the whole thing into a 60s-lit disco.  I absolutely could NOT see what I was throwing at.  My mom bowled a 175 or something, which is OUTSTANDING for her, but I was so pissed I could have sworn  I fell off a lemon tree.

6 games every time and not more than 8... normaly once a/during the week as I have not more time for bowling... but I also try to do some practice on Saturday so it is more twice a week...

The normal "league" run is 5-8 here and house league is 4 games so my practice run is within the needed amount of games.

In practice I do 3 games to try around and work on my style (concentrate e.g. on the approach or the release... naturally then the scores go down.or try around different shots and stuff)
the next three games I try to convert/transfer the "learnt" things into scores and do 3 games simply for scores and no trying around.

sometimes works... sometimes I simply do 6 bad games and call it "trying"

At least one more game of practice than you would in league i.e. if you bowl 3 games in eaue at least 4 games of practice. Work on things that you don't normally do when in league play new lines relases and ball speed that kind of thing you never know ehn having that knowledge in your game might be helpful.

For actual practice I bowl between four and six games.  Enough to get drenched in sweat, but not enough to get tired.  I either work on whatever my coach told me I should be working on or whatever I feel like I want to work on.  Alas, it's usually the later!  Lately I've been limiting myself to working on my fundamentals such as drift and arm swing.  Fortunately I can work on things like seven and tens at the same time.  I do not keep score, but I always roll nothing but strikes for the last few frames of practice in order to feel like I'm ending on a high note (and to stroke my ego).

Before league I usually play two or three games, but that is only to warm up and get into the proper competetive mindset, not to practice.  My goal for the the first game is pure warm up.  I don't keep score.  The second game my goals is to achieving a clean game with as many strikes as possible.  If I bowl a third game, it's because I failed to achive my goal in the second game.

I usually practice between 3-5 games.  I don't shoot for score, I basically work on different lines, and spares.  This week for example, I threw 2 games in which I shot the 10 pin on the first ball, and the 7 pin on the second.  Another game was spent throwing straight up 10 with my White Dot, and the last game I worked on playing deep going across 20.

Ar one time when i bowled they put the disco lights on and I kinda had to guess a bit where my mark was so I moved out a bit to play more on the edge to have a bit more room for missing my mark and I got 233 which was my best game that day but I got a bit pissed anyways cause I couldn't play my spares and missed 2 of them cause of the disco lights.

Even worse, the turned on the disco stuff 10 minutes early and even though I complained they didn't turn em off but I didn't have to pay anything that day which was kinda worthless cause it was my game I wanted. Well, I should of quit but when I did feel I got stuff working I couldn't stop.

Back to the subject, I bowl 4-8 games something when I practice.

Rarely do I make a trip to the Center for practice alone .. I do most of my practice after a bad league showing .. and that happens more then you would expect!

I'm fairly consistent with Spare shooting .. so unlike many other bowlers . when I practice it's mostly to get the ball in the pocket. What I find is that after bowling LOUSY in a league session I get moved to a different pair for my practice .. usually the new pair is a LOT DIFFERENT then where I struggled. Most of the time I shoot well on the PRACTICE pair. It then becomes a CONFIDENCE BOOSTER .. where I conclude that the LEAGUE PAIR was a BAD SHOT

My how practice improves ones game...

I bowl 6-8 games now and my last set was 189, 218, 206, 207, 170, and a 234. The 170 was a mental lapse. I stepped it up in the last game.

I generally do the majority of my practicing during cosmic bowl. If you can keep your calm and concentrate while all the craziness is going on around you then league night or the unfamilar surroundings of a tournament are easy to deal with. Works for me.
I generally end up bowling 7-10 games as it is 10$ to bowl 10pm to 1am.

I usually throw 6-8 games when I practice.  I go in with a plan such as games 1 & 2 work on form, I will work on different aspects for 5 frames and then go to another.  Game 3 spares, 1st ball 10 pin or 6-10 or 3-6-10, second ball whatever is left.  Game 4 left side spares and then get lined up games 5,6,and 7 in the last couple of frames.  I will bowl the last three games like league, I try to use what I practiced on and score as much as possible.  For the practice games I turn on the TV overhead and turn the scoreboard so I do not see it.  I check it just to see what frame I am in.  It is not uncommon for me to score around 400 total for the first 4 games.  If there is something not right and I still fell like it I may stay for an 8th and final practice game.

If you keep score, or are trying to score well, are you really practicing?

Hmm, I cannot keep up a frequent training schedule due to my work, but I try to play at least once a week, twice is the objective. Mostly Friday/weekend, sometimes I make it to my club during the week for official team training sessions.

In normal training sessions, I will do 6-10 games when I am on my own, or less if I play with friends, but rarely less than 6 games.

I mostly work on consistency and changing lines, and also on reading the lane and switching equipment, finding a new line quickly because this is important for my league formats and my slower playing style. Another problem I stioll battle is the 1st game on the lane. I need very long to get relaxed enough to play properly. Very critical, esp. in league/tournament, but I am not sure if I can really improve on this despite warming up etc. Maybe also a mental thing?

Well, when I play on my own, I also make dedicated spare sessions, either to try new things or just for the sake of repetition, or I dedicate games just to try new/different lines - lately I experimented with the 1st arrow (I am useed to play across 3rd), and some training just to get the different look onto the lane right is IMO very important, just to be prepared in case the lane calls for such a shot.

I do not care much about training results anymore, even though I note them and how I am going overall. In the long run, things even out.

Training is very important for either working on your strengths, find solutions foryour weaknesses and to broaden your spectrum of options.

When you practice your goal shouldn't be to score but more so to work on your weak points and polish your strong. Of course spares to.I usually bowl three games with a ball that is hard to score with and try to double hitting every arrow.

I practiced at least 4 games (usually more), 2-3 days a week. I dedicated 2 game on taking the 10/7 pin with the first throws and the second with the normal shot. Then the remaining games I focussed on finding the best line to play (swing out/straight down, increse/decrease axis rotation etc.). Lately, I practiced throwing at 7th or 5th board than my normal 10th. Score doesnt matter when I practiced. I do prefer to practice alone.

Practice is what it says it is PRACTICE. Do Not Worry About Your Score. The best advise that anyone can give you is to work on your Position,Grip,Alignment,Foot Work,Release,Follow Through. These are the things that will make you a better bowler besides Spare Shooting on that subject ask your front desk if they offer a spare shooting pin set that is different each time so you can practice that. This is the best advise anyone can give you asides visiting your local Pro and taking some lessons and have him/her suggest game improvement techniques for you to work on.

That depends on how much time I've got..
I myself don't look at my scores or judge them on how I'm doing..
When I go out to practice, I focused more on my faults in my game, more then scores..

i.e. balance at the line, and posting the shot, different lines, hand positioning, pick a target, and try to hit my marks over n over know matter where it hits the pins.. take the spare ball and use that instead of strike ball..
Those are some of the things I do when going to PRACTICE..

Depends on the amount of time I have.  When I was a beginner (oh, so long ago), I would bowl 10-15 games/day.  In those days, we had paper/pencil scoring and I would fill up the scoresheet.

These days with electronic scoring systems, I get a pair of lanes and put A-L in the name spaces (6 letters/side) and just throw the ball.  My concern ceases to be score and bends more towards form, rhythm, and other details.

Ahhhhhhh practice, back in the day when open play was less than a buck, I could take a twenty and practice for hours, today for that same twenty I can get 4-5 games in, which doesn't give me alot of time doing what I used to do. Alot for me was repetition, which means making my body do the same thing over and over and over again.

Nowadays, I take my plastic ball and loosen up for a game, than think about what I'm doing for 3 games, and than have fun for the last game, which means I look at the score for the last game, and on a house shot, that usally means a 250-260 game. Than on my very last shot, I take my plastic ball back out and throw it as hard as I can at the 10 pin

It is recommended for stamina purposes, that you should practice at least one more game in a set than what you would normally bowl for league/tournaments(i.e. 4 games is the norm)
What I like to work on is making sure my tempo stays in control.  First game I try to establish a defined area on the lane(typically on the house shot 15-5 is my comfort zone).  I take my favorite ball of the day, and just worry about release and timing.  I don't practice for scoring purposes, I know I can score, I am working on muscle memory to help me feel in the groove for longer periods of time.  After the first "warm-up" game, I generally move inside and play a little bit deeper, then jump outside, trying different hand positions and releases.
Hopefully this helps.

3-6 games and everything depends on specifics: working with a certain ball, playing a new angle, spare shooting, specific physical aspect, or just squeezing off rounds to work on timing in general. Scores aren't always important unless they help reinforce a positive mental state like what happened to me in 2004.

5-7 games for me to work on stamina, timing, and my "ball (or two) of the day", and how they react against each other.  When the family goes with me, they usually get one lane, and I practice on the other.

A good technique that I've heard of is to put in a letter for each game, that way you don't focus on the score.  For example, if I bowl 6 games in practice, I'll use the letters A-F.  I'll have to try it the next time I practice...
