New ball + New Grip = ?
« on: April 08, 2007, 01:39:31 AM »
After a 25 yr. lay off from bowling and starting back up a couple of months ago I decided it was time to get a new ball and chage my grip from conventional.  I been reading the board and decided I really didn't know anything and went to the pro for help. I ended up with a Power Grove Reactive drilled with inserts.

Here are my first time results

1 - 124   Just trying to hold on to the ball
2 - 134
3 - 178
4 - 154

I was really pleased for the first time with all the changes.  I had to move seven board to the left from my old conventional starting point, so had some hook.

The only problem I had was after bowling I either wore a blister or peeled a layer of skin off my ring finger.  What could this be from ( release ? )

Thanks

Without looking at your fingers, inserts and span it's hard to say exact but I'd guess it may very well be from changing to finger tip or your insert may have a small bump in it or your span may be a bit off and you are squeezing the ball.

I'd go back to the pro shop, show them the blister and have them look at the insert, could be to small or to large. Talk to them, they can see your grip/release and it may well be just the changing grip that has caused the problem. Either way, I'd say go back and talk to them.

...or, it's just the natural result of friction to skin after having not bowled for 25 years.

Earlier this year I was practicing 20 plus games per week in addition to my three leagues. After Christmas I all but stopped practicing, went out last week and shot 14 games...result: a huge blister on the pad of my middle finger (exactly where it should be).

If your equipment feels good just give the blister a few days to heal and go at it again. Once your skin toughens up the blistering should stop. If it doesn't, then yes, you have a pitch and/or span problem and need to do some tweaking.
