Slowing down...
« on: April 11, 2007, 11:44:55 AM »
Anyone know of somethings to try in my effort to slow my motion down? Change my steppings, say something subconcious, anything?

I've had people say I throw hard, and I feel like I'm mentally/phyiscally slowing down.

Any input would be appreciated.

Move up on the approach?  When I absolutely need to slow down, I move up about a foot.  Works like a charm.

feet for timing, or lower ball speed?

Feet I just make my first step purposefuly slow and it carries on from there. Make sure you aren't doing your approach on your toes as that can lean you forward and make you "race".

Slowing just the ball speed can be accomplished with a ball lower push off if you have a free armswing. Or if it's really ugly and slick (like for me tonight) I'll start my 4 step with my ball already held out and down removing the ball pushoff portion pretty much all together.

That's a good one! Additionally, let the (free) arm pendulum dictate the cadence of your feet. Keeping the ball low in the adress position (waist height or even lower) will also help, and do not force the backswing.
You will be astonished how much time you will "find" in your approach

I went from a 5 step to a 4 step approach, and no more running! Probably as others have said, was because I was forced to move closer on the approach.

Move closer to the foul line.  Start with the ball lower in your stance.  And (I know, this one is hard) just let the ball drop as you start your approach.

The first step is the most important.  If you start that one off slowly, the rest will "follow suit," as Mainzer said.

Take two BIG steps closer to the foul line.  You'll find out that if you're closer, you can't throw as hard because you don't have enough kinetic energy.  Eventually, you may move back, but it will feel weird.  You will actually "instinctually" move up because you will have practiced it so much.

Relax.  Get a high backswing, and once the ball is at the top, let gravity take over, your arm go dead, and the ball do the work.  The ball will roll, and not be thrown by you.

If you can keep the Fred Flintstone feet slow, and your arm "following suit," you will make your shots slower.  Bowling requires very little muscle.
