Need a third weapon
« on: March 01, 2016, 10:11:21 AM »
Hello Bowlers,
I am a new bowler (roughly 6 months). I bowl with two hands. I need a third ball in my bag. I currently have Red Dark legend (my favorite) and Viral Solid (i had them take the polish off). Both balls I have them drilled to be very aggressive. I need that third ball. I want a Hammer. Even though I am new I believe in buying the best. Thank you for your time.

Just from your post, I would say you need a spare ball.

A few questions are needing answered before anyone will touch this:

When looking for a new ball, what gap are you looking to fill?

What is your speed and rev rate?

I do not know my rev rate. The space that I am trying to fill I guess is what bowlers call dry lanes no oil at all. I seen a black hammer urathane ball. I am new so all this is really foreign to me.

Thanks. You will learn your rev rate over time, and other specs. If you enjoy the sport, and want to get better, think about lessons from a good coach. Especially since you are starting out.

If you are looking for a dry lanes ball, I feel all companies make great entry level pieces.

I am not a staffer and will not try to sway you to one company or another. So with that said, I would look into a Storm Mix (a pearl urethane) that could double as your spare ball as well. I know a few two handers that carry this ball.

And you mentioned a black hammer, I am not familiar with that ball, but many two handed bowlers in this area use urethane.

#1 issue I've seen with 2 handers is the inability to pick up a 10 pin. If you don't have that figured out getting a good spare ball will do your game wonders. If you don't have a 10 pin issue then you could go a couple ways.

Viral Pearl to match up with the solid.
Blue Urethane- unsure of the 2h dry lane match up here- out of my comfort zone
Ebonite Cyclone- outside of Hammer but still Hammer family; this would be my recommendation, very versatile ball here, amazing bang for your buck too.

Westtex,
I thought it was me,but you are sooooooooooooooo right about that freakin 10 pin and i can not pick it up for the world. It is fustrating. I try to push the 6th pin(i think its the 6th) into the 10 pin but it dosen't work. I even try to connect the dots but all I do is hand the ball off to the gutter like I'm a quarterback and the gutter is the running back. I will read up on the balls metioned.

Ya 2handers get those awesome revs + entry angle. They are a blessing on your 1st ball, a curse many times on the 2nd haha.

Being a one hander does have an advantage on the 10 pin b/c we can simply flatten our release and never need to switch balls or completely change our approach.

I've seen some 2handers throw a backup ball.
I've seen some switch back to 1 handed to pick it up.
I've seen some with Spare balls.

You might want to get a spare ball.
Balls don't last forever, so you shouldn't use the strike balls for sparing, unless there's many pins left.
Some people use the strike balls when there's pins on the left side though, but not when there's pins on the right. For right handers.
I'll stick with my plastic ball for sparing from now on though. Whenever I try using the strike balls, I mess up, not always, but often.
The strike balls is good to use if you got a split. Not on baby split though.

Last week at practice I had a split of 3-6-7-10. Used my Jackal and got it to hit in between 3 and 6 and got them all down. Was pretty cool.
Was the second such split that practice, didn't get the first one down, but was close.

If you mostly play on heavy oil like we do here, then you could of course get a ball that's meant for light oil and use it as a spare ball. It could be good to have a ball that will slightly hook when you have the 10 left, in case you get it too far out and then it'll hook before going into the gutter, maybe.

Tore Torgersen told me that he didn't want to sell me the Motiv Arctic Sniper as a spare ball, because it hooks a bit. But Motiv says it has 0 hook potential.
Ascent might be good light oil balls to use as spare ball on heavy oil.

Most used:
Motiv Venom Shock (14)
DV8 Grudge Hybrid (14)
Hammer Scandal (14)
DV8 Freakshow (14)

Sometimes.
C300 Swerve (14)
Motiv Jackal LE (14)

Retired:
Roto Grip Sinister (13)
Motiv Jackal (14)

Given to a no-thumber in the club:
Brunswick T-zone (13)

Might stick with Motiv from now on.

Ascent should outhook the sniper all on the backend so I wouldn't recommend it for spares if you throw 2 hands.
My recommendation would be a straight up polyester spare ball as straighter is greater when you are only trying to hit 1 or 2 pins.  TZone, Vizaball and keep it polished
