Title: Starting bowling again
Post by: Melwoods64 on January 19, 2020, 05:47:29 PM
Hello All,

I just joined the site and this is my first post.  I consider myself a casual bowler, although in the past (approx. 10 years ago) I was a twice a week league bowler.  I carried a pedestrian average (160), so not too terrible.  Anyway, on to my post.  I'm looking to get back into league bowling.  I haven't picked up a ball in over 2 years, I had a hand injury.  That injury is healed and my hand is 100%.

At this time I am looking to purchase a 1 ball to use during a night of bowling, meaning I would use it for the night, regardless of the lane condition as the night progresses.  The ball I currently have is about 10 years old, so it's time to get current.  I started looking at reviews and information and it is a bit overwhelming.  I think the hard part for me is I don't know exactly where to start.  I plan to go to one of the better bowling establishment's pro shop in the area, but want to have half a clue before I go in.

Here is a little information that may help.  I am a right handed, down and in bowler, maybe considered traditional, foot slide between the 2nd and 3rd foul line dot, with the ball rolling over the 2nd arrow, breaking towards the pocket in the latter stage of the roll.  I use a 14 pound ball with a finger tip grip.  I am not a high rev, high speed thrower, I would consider myself average in each category.  I know that last sentence doesn't help much, but I haven't had my throw speed tested in a long time.

I realize the info I provided isn't precise nor scientific, I'm just looking for some suggestions and I welcome all constructive input and consideration.

Thanks all,

Mel

Your description pretty much sums up my game.  I purchased a Phase III from my
PSO recommendation, I had it drilled to go long and I can play it down and in with it.
It's 14 lbs.  Ball does as advertised.  Another ball I enjoy is the Motiv Supra.

Everyone makes good stuff nowadays. Best bang for your buck will be balls that are "mid-level".

I always like to recommend symmetrical cores to newer bowlers or people coming back from a long break as they're not as release-sensitive as asymmetric can be.

Brunswick/DV8/Radical - Edge series, Hero, Turmoil series, Squatch series
Hammer/Ebonite/C300/Track - Vibes, Destiny, Kinetic series
Storm/Roto - HyRoad, Match-Up series, Hustle series, MVP series, Phaze 3
900 Global - Boosts and Ordnances
Motiv - Hydra, Rogue Blade, Venom Recoil

Thank you @ACES80 and SVstar34 for your input and recommendations.  I was a little impatient and decided to pull the trigger on the Motive Covert Tank.  I just received it and will have it drilled in a day or two.  I'll follow up with my findings, I'm sure I will be pleased.  Feeling like a kid on Christmas day.  :-)

Also, for anyone interested in seeing what the south Texas heat will do to your bowling ball when left in a stand alone garage for 2 years, just look at the pics.  Let's just say this is not one of the brightest things I have ever done, leaving my ball in the garage.

Hey... those grips look like they're in good shape. Should be easy to get out too.  ;D

4 days after asking for suggestions on a ball. Wow, you were antsy and revved up to purchase a ball.  :) Good luck with your endeavor. It's a whole different bowling world out there with today's conditions, from even a few short years ago. Good luck & good bowling 2 U.  8)
