Title: The thumb...
Post by: Noy on April 07, 2006, 01:09:14 AM
Hello all, yet another newb question, or more like a poll.

When i was playing with the house ball, I could never find a ball that really fit my hand (who does?), I was always putting my thumb half way in.  Well, now that I have my own ball that custom fits to my hand, I'm starting to put my thumb all the way in.  My pro shop guy says this is the hardest adjustment for new bowlers, that is, putting the thumb all the way in.

Did anyone feel uncomfortable, mild soreness, or anything of the sort when they first started bowling?  How did you overcome it? Time? Adjusting the holes?

I guess its like learning guitar where the strings hurt your fingers, but you get used to it after a while, but I'd still like to hear from you guys =)

Time and technique are going to help your thumb feel better. When I first began throwing a finger-tip ball, my thumb would swell up after each set because me release was inconsistent. Now that I've gotten more consistent with how the ball comes off my hand, I can bowl 10 games in a day and my thumb still looks and feels fine. Since you are just starting out, you may have to tinker with pitches and fittings for a while, but time is still going to be the most determining factor. Just be patient.

Your ball driller has a lot of tools to reduce any pain.

Slight tweaks of bevel...rounding of thumbhold on top edge of thumb.

Or if pain is farther down thumb...he can put yellow pencil near area rubbing and find spot in hole touching...of course the bevel thing above can change that too!

Tell him...he wants you to come back for another sale after he makes things perfect for you.

I managed to find a Columbia 300 Aftershock at a local bowling alley and decided to use it to see how it performed. It fit my hand fairly well, except the thumb hole was a LITTLE too small..

Well, needless to say, after about 4 games, I had a giant blister on my thumb from the knuckle rubbing the inside of the slug. Not fun, because it prevented me from bowling for about another week :/.
