Title: thumb tightness

How tight should the thumb be in the ball?  I see some clips of pros and you can hear them squeeze their thumb into their balls.  Are they using a certain type of insert?

I tape mine until it's pretty snug for the reason terplife03 mentions. It allows me to relax my grip a little better.
