Rolling over thumb hole
« on: October 27, 2009, 02:53:14 AM »
Hey.  Is it possible to have a high degree of axis rotation say 80 or 90 degrees and still roll over the thumb hole?  I have been getting some over/under reaction lately and I know I am not coming up behind the ball.  My first oil track is about 1" from my middle finger (I'm a righty) but it goes through the middle of my thumb hole.  The ball (Rogue Cell) is spinning like crazy with a high rev rate but it just skids with no reaction on the dry.  Any takers?

Yes, you can have a high degree of rotation of axis and roll over the thumb hole. You may have little or no tilt, almost a full roller, possibly? Rotation of axis and size of track(tilt) are two different things. Also, it could be caused by a defective ball or strange pin/mb layout. What is the layout? If you throw a plastic ball with a pancake core, and it rolls over the thumb or between the thumb and fingers, you are a full roller. Some of the high tech cores will start on the thumb and roll 3/4 from there, giving the impression that the bowler is a 3/4 high track when in fact he is a full roller.

Check if you break back wrist upon release. It might happen subconsciously, so a video or the eye of an experienced player will help. If you break it back too far, the track might rise, clipping the thumb hole or even moving as high as for a full roller, which normally runs between the thumb and finger holes. RPMs have little to do with this, and it also occurs regardless of the axis rotation.

Besides, the pooh is correct that either the ball can have a funky weight distribution, or the drilling makes it flare wrong, e. g. backwards. The latter could easily be the case, since the Cell core has a higher mass bias and its placement is vital for a proper ball reaction. Is the MB marker in or beyond the track area? This could be a potential source of the problem.

the way you worded that makes me think you are doing what I was.

You most likely are turning your wrist WAY early. sure the ball is spinning at a high rev rate and you have lots of rotation BUT the ball just skids and skids almost the entire lane unless you happen to find juuuust the right amount of dry.

what Im betting you are dong is pre-ignition (turning your wrist early). this causes you to lose ALL leverage and actually robs you of ball reaction. I'm still not sure how it practically makes the ball go straight as an arrow as youd think it would still be creating a lot of friction.

i had the exact same ball reaction you describe and had to be coached to stop from doing it. I was able to throw 90 degrees of rotation every single shot with a rev rate of about 350 but on even medium conditions my ball would just skate the whole lane.

IF this is your problem I can think of three things you can try:

#1 - get a good coach if you have the time and/or money and want to improve your game. Its the most effective way to improve and wish I would have done that a long time ago as I spent WAY more on bowling balls first and that didnt help at all.

#2 - practice throwing a football underhanded. you will notice that the ONLY way to throw an underhanded spiral is to rotate your wrist from left to right (for a righty) AFTER it passes your ankle. Go ahead try and twist your wrist before your ankle, it sure wont be a high reving spiral thats for sure. keep that in mind while you bowl.

#3 - what I do is right as soon as my left hand leaves the ball and my downswing starts I consciously torque my fingers towards my right leg and keep them there until my hand Juuuust passes my body. this puts your hand at a minimum of 7 o'clock at this point your hand rotates more towards a shaking hand position (left to right). if done properly you WILL notice the ball bite and have a considerably different ball reaction.

and of course this all only IF you are turning early. if you arent then I apologize. but thats what it sounds like.
