Title: Timing
Post by: SrKegler on October 20, 2023, 02:21:26 PM
Hi guys, having a little problem tugging the ball causing it to go left of target.  Is that late timing or early.  Any suggestions.

Due to shoulder pain, I had modified my armswing by stopping the backswing short.  Then, I was muscling the ball forward because I had lost the natural pendulum motion.  End result was a lot of pulled shots.  Now that I don't have the same pain, I am trying to get that natural pendulum armswing back and I am not pulling the ball when I do execute that.

Not saying that is your problem, but it was mine.

Timing in bowling is dictated by where the ball is when the slide foot stops. If the ball is in front of slide side ankle that is early timing. If the ball is even with the ankle that is neutral timing and if the ball is behind that is late timing. On the surface it sounds like you have early timing. There are good bowlers with each of these timings, so timing is not your issue. Your issue is probably related to where your bowling side shoulder is. If it gets too far in front, you will pull the ball. A lot of people have this issue, because they don’t use legs and throw too much with arm. With that said, I usually try to fix with students by focusing on balance. It is very hard to pull the ball from a balanced finish position or you could just practice keeping your shoulder back. Just something simple to try.
