The Promised Video
« on: July 08, 2007, 12:35:12 PM »
Here it is, as promised video from todays practice session.  Have fun and critique away.  See my "Throw and Pray" style of bowling

The angle was so I could see the swing plane, sorry it is not the best, but it suited my purpose.  If I can get some one to video later, I'll post more.

Everything that I saw was a reminder of how consistent you were, and still are.  Very smooth and fluid, repeating the same thing shot after shot.  We all need practice, but seems to me that your swing is in tune.

Your swing looks ok, but you are def. late a lot.  Which causes you to come across your body or drop the ball.  If you start moving the ball on your first step you will see a big difference.

Buggs41 & Sawmill -
Thanks for the comments.  It is getting there, but I still need to work on it.

AMFTrack -

You are correct on the late timing.  I have always been late on the first step/pushaway and am working on it.  When it does come together it is awesome.  It is better than it was, at one point I wasn't moving the ball until almost the end of the 2nd step.

FBM-
Come out to CA and I would have no problem, but looking at your profile, you don't need my coaching.  Thanks for the comments

I have to give credit to my awesome coach, Juan Fonseca.  He has been patient and stuck by me through all the ups and downs along the way.  He has been a constant source of information, support, and encouragement.

TP,

You're doing good girl! I see two things:

1. You need to get the ball down more quickly...not carry it so much. This will free up your swing more. By the time your second step touches down, your ball should be down at the bottom of your backswing. This has something to do with the timing you're working on.

2. Like most women (and many men, including me) you need to get the ball around your rear end, so you swing the ball around it and in behind your back and then back around again. This is why your ball is a bit far from your ankle at the release point and losing some leverage. It also makes you tend to try to help the ball hook by following thru across your body. Your timing contributes to the follow through too.

A simple fix that Del Warren taught me is to get set up to bowl with my hips swung out of the way...to the right for you. So you have your head over the ball, your hips swung in to the right, and the ball over your left foot. This is a nice easy and balanced position with your hips already out of the way that will help you swing in a nice straight plane. Head, ball, and foot in a straight up and down line and the hips swung in to the right of the line.

Keep it up!

Great form as always, your timing looks fine, The ball is at your side on the second step, at or near the apex on the 3rd step and your foot is stopped before the ball gets there in the slide, if you post a side view I can tell better by your shoulder movement (if your armswing is trying to catch up to your feet etc...)

I think Revzilla gave you some good advice on getting the hips out of the way, just reverse it for being left handed, your hips should face the left being left handed. Suzie Minshew taught me this trick for getting your trail leg out of the way it is called "move your arse", meaning most bowlers would be better served to get the trail leg out of the way before the ball gets there. The best way to do that is to push a little harder and quicker going into the slide, but don't speed your armswing up.

Your swing plane starts in front of your body, then goes away from your body, you try to open your shoulder to compensate, but when you close your shoulders back down to square up to your target, the ball gets away from your slide foot.
To fix this you are going to have to experiment with a couple of different push aways: Push toward the 7 pin as opposed to the 10 pin as you are now, and or hold the ball farther in front of you, or hold the ball farther away from you. You will have to experiment with these combinations to see which is best for you.

Your swing really gets away from you when you turn the ball early like on the first shot in the video, you stay behind it well in the last shot in the video. There are numerous ways to fix this everyone is different you will have to pick one or come up with one of your own, if you do please post it I would like to know, mine are:

1. Ring finger leads the down swing from the top of the back swing, middle finger extends to your target on release. John Jowdy's book "Execution" covers this one.

2. Keep your thumb outside of your elbow. I came up with this one myself.

3. Keep your wrist in a relaxed weak position until just after the ball reaches the top of your back swing, then put your wrist and hand in the release position as the ball heads down to the release zone. This creates a spring like affect in that it springs your hand behind the ball just before it gets to the release zone and seems to hold it there until you release the ball. I came up with this one yesterday. Turning my hand too early has been a problem for me throughout the past 30 years, so in 30 years of working on it I should have came up with something I guess. If you try it, let me know how it goes for you.

Your swing plane issues are definitely the result of turning the ball early, either pick one of the above or come up with one of your own, if you do, post it because great minds think alike and that one thought might help someone else.

First of all thanks for the input.  I'll run some of the suggestions by my coach at our session later today and see what he says.

Second, I found a disc my coach gave me of video shot at our first session.  You can see what he had to start with and why I went to a coach  I had been bowling 27 years before I went to him for lessons.

I don't see why you worry so much about your bowling.Your approach and release look really good.Just concentrate on hitting your mark and trust the ball.

Good video.

LOL Yes, I am one of those evil ones from the dark side  I tease my coach every once in a while and tell him I switching to right handed.  He cringes and says "Nooooo, no, no, no"

tog841,

It's not so much worry as wanting to reach a certain level of play.  I want to be a competitive bowler and at 51, I don't know when the arthritis and pains will start to take their toll on my bowling.  I have friends younger than me with bad knees, shoulder joints, wrist problems etc.

Thank you for your comments.  At my lesson yesterday, my coach was very pleased with the armswing and release.  We actually got to start working on the various adjustments.

Very solid bowler much better form than me and most guys in my men's league. The one thing i noticed is that you are around the side pretty good, have you ever worked on more up the back of the ball??

It would help your ball project down lane farther to a more consistent breakpoint, i notice off you hand you are already trying to keep the ball inline as soon as you release the ball. Probably has more to do with the somewhat late timing because your swing is trying to catch up with the body.

I notice when i am watching top bowlers that there hands come totally through the ball and then impart the side rotation. Being in Vegas has helped me alot with being around alot of well known players and bowling on a few of there teams over the years. Also working with Billy Hall and Wendy Mac has helped me out some besides the other i have worked with coaching wise.

LOL NappyCuts - see response to CharlieBrown  I have bowled for fun right handed in open play and it is not pretty.  I think my high game right handed is maybe a 130 something.  I'll stick with the darkside
