I never looked this close before but I'm surprised at how much room Earl had between where his right foot slid on the approach and where he laid the ball down. It looked like 10 - 15 boards. We're always taught to lay the ball down as close to the slide ankle as possible.

 Jeff,
I worked with Earl in Waukegan, IL one afternoon . . . He could stand 35 and play 10...
I watched him bowl most tournaments when he in Chicago....He was like WRW, Jr.
Unbelievable.... We ran a stop watch on him one block of games....his approach didn't vary by 1/2 second on any shot. He did whatever it took.

One time, some RH bowlers, said he couldn't even hit the pock et on what was out on the lane...in his street shoes, he threw a ball 5th arrow that fell back into the pocket, and blew the rack... then threw the same ball outside 5 hit the pocket....

I really enjoyed watching him and Roth bowl....

Thanks for posting.  It is always a pleasure to watch him bowl and to bowl at his house in Dublin, California (still owned by his wife Susie).

Is he throwing a Sapphire Zone there?

Continuation, that's what I see watching Earl bowl. Forget what you see with his arm. Just watch the ball keep rolling. If I could get that monster roll...

In search of the perfect ball reaction....

Richard,

No need to convince me how good he was. I think he was the best, bar none.

I was just surprised at this aspect of his approach. All the good ones seem to do it their own way.

As far as I know, he didn't have one ball speed. He had three. He used what he needed to get to the pocket. That was one of his favorite practices, along with hand releases. He had 3 of each. So with any one ball he had nine different breakpoints. I think one might call that versatility.

 Jeff,
Very true...lots of Hall of Famers are not "textbook" bowlers, they know how to get the job done...I liked Earl's total focus.
