Ball: Brunswick C-(System) ulti-max

Initial Surface Preparation:

Box finish

Purpose:

To give me an asymmetrical ball to use for medium to medium-dry conditions. The last ball that I had in this category was the C-(System) 2.5, and while this ball worked well for me at times, I had to have a clean ball path with a blend from side to side and from front to back in order to get a predictable ball reaction, as the 2.5 would tend to bounce off of friction, and flutter a bit on choppy conditions or when there was some push down lane.

Observations:

In my tournament bag, I have a C-(System) alpha-max and a Wicked Siege, both drilled with the pin 5” from my PAP, above the fingers, and a 60-degree locator line angle. Thus, for comparison purposes, I went with a C-(System) ulti-max with a 3 ¾” pin-to-CG distance, so that I could use this layout. I did need to put a balance hole on my PAP to get the ending statics legal.

The first time I used the C-(System) ulti-max was on a house pattern with some play on it, at a center with Pro Anvilanes. The ulti-max was clean through the front part of the lane, cleaner than the Wicked Siege, but it read the midlane earlier than the C-(S) v4.5. The move at the break was strong, but not as abrupt as that of the v4.5 or the 2.5. The ulti-max exhibited the same superior pin movement and carry and as the previous C-(System) balls.

Since then, I’ve used the C-(System) ulti-max on house shots at several centers, and on a few Kegel patterns. For the most part, the house shots that I’ve been seeing have had quite a bit of friction, and because of this, I’ve been forced to play further to the left than usual, due to the way the ulti-max responds to friction. I never had trouble getting the ball to recover, though, even when I had to use head belly from further inside. On fresher house shots, I did find that the shiny surface was giving me a bit of over-under, but to be fair, I would be more inclined to use the C-(System) alpha-max on the fresh, to blend the condition more from front to back.

I was particularly impressed with the performance of the C-(System) ulti-max on the more challenging conditions. The one thing that I really liked about the C-(System) 2.5 was its adeptness at creating area on flatter patterns, and the C-(System) ulti-max was no different in this regard. With the shiny factory surface preparation, I was afraid that the ulti-max might push too far and break loose of the lane, and while its reaction in front is extremely clean, the ulti-max will start up quickly enough to where it can open up the midlane better than the C-(System) v4.5.

Conclusions:

Before the release of the C-(System) alpha-max, the C-(System) series has been fairly condition-specific for me. Each ball had a condition where it would work well, but the line didn’t have the same level of versatility as the Siege or Revolver series, and thus the C-(S) balls would end up being arsenal pieces in my tournament bag. The alpha-max was different, though, notably in how it had a more controllable midlane reaction without sacrificing its strength through the pin deck. The C-(System) ulti-max is continuing this trend, and will be a good “go-to” ball for conditions where the alpha-max is burning too early.

The C-(System) ulti-max has the look of the v4.5 through the heads, but reads the midlane sooner than the v4.5, and less abruptly than the 2.5. The move off of the friction is not as jumpy as that of the v4.5 or 2.5, but is stronger than that of the Wicked Siege or the Revolver series.

Right now, I’m using the C-(System) ulti-max as a complement to the Massive Damage for medium conditions. I’ll use the Massive to play more direct lines, and the ulti-max when I can use more of the friction, or when I want to open up the lane more.

COMMENTS

I bowled games of 205 228 300 in my saturday league. Im right handed high rev & speed player. I love being able to play deep inside angles with this ball because it hits the pins with plenty of energy to send them flying around. I have only 6 games on this ball to this date. below is a pic of my layout.

Likes: The ball is very clean through the heads, with a visible read in mid-lane & very strong back-end reaction continuous through the pin deck.

Knowing the Ultimax is marketed to be cleaner and more angular than previous c-system line balls, I decided to drill this similar to my pin up C system 2.5, which was one of my favorites. I was excited that Brunswick decided to take this from 500 to 1500 siiair before rough buff was applied as it definitely gives it the added length we look for with balls like this. So far I have enjoyed using this ball on house conditions since it completely ignores the front part of the lane and just waits for friction. This is great when theres friction down lane or to the right, which is the definition of most house shots.

Because of the angularity this ball creates for me, I am able to really utilize this ball on long patterns. It allows me to get left and play between 4^th and 5^th arrow and as long as I don’t leak it too far right, the ball transitions quickly enough to give maximum entry angle into the pocket. On shorter conditions this ball is a little too strong off the end of the pattern to really utilize at box finish. If it was the only ball in my bag, I would probably tap it with some surface to tame the backend down in that situation. But what fun would that be, and since its not the only ball in my bag, Ill save this one for when its time to create some angle. That’s what makes this ball so fun to throw.

I drilled this ball last from the new releases and I'm glad I did! I went with the dual angle layout of 55deg x 4-7/8" x 40deg with no weight hole! I waited to drill this ball cause I wanted to use the others first and was unsure of the layout I wanted or want reaction I wanted or needed!! This layout placed the pin above my middle finger with the MB right of my thumb cause I wanted more/most length of all of my balls. I got exactly what I wanted and needed with this ball and layout! It's the longest in length of my balls, but it's also the most angular at the breakpoint. This ball allows me to move left into the oil as needed and still have the power to turn the corner without losing pin carry! Thhis ball is a lot of fun to roll and watch turn the corner!!! Move left and unlease your inner beast!!!! A great fun ball from the Big B, I think B must stand for Blast!!!! Just my $.02, Bruce

Length: Definitely not the longest ball in my bag, but far too clean in the heads for heavy oil.

Back End: Very surprising.

Overall Hook: Not gonna be the strongest ball in your bag, but is a good compliment to any heavy oil ball, especially the AlphaMax.

Midlane Read: With this layout, the midlane was strong. I've seen this ball drilled a couple different ways for some staff players, and the new core seems to be very tunable to the desired reaction.

Breakpoint Shape: Potentially the most angular Brunswick ball to date. The new cover is pretty strong off of friction, and asymmetrical cores can give you the most explosion in the backends imaginable.

COMMENTS

Likes: Lots to like about this ball. To me, what stands out most is the variety of ball reactions you can achieve through layouts. Players that have it set up for length and backend as well as players that are looking for midlane and continuation are all pleased with the reaction they've gotten. The variety of reactions I see reminds me of a Vapor Zone, and the versatility that ball had.

Dislikes: A little sluggish in thicker volumes of oil, but nothing a little touch-up with a Siaair or Abralon pad can't fix.

Initial thoughts:

This ball is marketed as the most backend of any Brunswick ball ever. Although I still wanted to have a lot of angularity, I still wanted a reliable drilling pattern that I know can control the entire lane. Hence, I went with my favorite asymmetrical layout for this ball since I know I can trust it’s versatility.

Observations:

On our house shot, this ball hooks a ton. Even though it’s a relatively medium volume THS, I still didn’t expect to be inside as deep as I was. Also, as advertised, THIS BALL CORNERS HARD! Even with my “control” layout this ball was digging into the friction and really made a strong move off the spot. If you are looking for a strong, angular ball then look no further. This ball really delivers through with what the advertisements promise. I was able to comfortably play 4^th-5^th arrow on my THS and didn’t have to worry once about the Ulti not making its way back to the pocket. What really makes this ball special is that it still keeps the pins low for better carry (like all the other C-Systems) and that it has the strong traction off of the breakpoint that the C-System line is known for. With a similar layout, I have the Ulti at about 2 boards stronger than the 2.5 and that difference comes at the breakpoint. Long story short, this ball is the big brother of the 2.5; has the same basic look and features, but is a little bit stronger. So if you love your 2.5, I guarantee that you’ll love the Ulti-Max even more.

I plan to take the cover to 4000 after my initial testing of this ball. I know this ball is still going to be plenty angular to play as deep as needed but to control the breakpoint just a little more for the tougher patterns. I can really see this ball shine on longer sport patterns when I need to move in deep but still need a ball that will corner hard to carry the corners out.

Final thoughts:

I really love this ball for the spot it fills in my arsenal. This is a big backend-ing ball that can absolutely come back from anywhere. The cover is clean enough to ignore the heads while the core and cover really pick up a hard read on the friction and tractions all the way through the pins. Truly an amazing ball if you’re looking for some angle. Not to mention the value with the $50 rebate!

Likes: Good length through the front part of the lane, decent midlane read, and strong continuous arc from the break point off the back of the pin deck. This ball allows me to play all parts of the lane with hand position adjustments and ball speed changes. I am typically a stroker up the boards, but with this ball I can play more of the 15-20 board area out to 8-10 at the break point on a THS and the ball recovers nicely and makes the corner back to the pocket. The Alpha is still stronger on heavier patterns and cuts through the carry down better, but the Ulti will for sure be the first ball out of my bag.

When this ball was announced, I was looking for something that gave me a little more pop in the back than the Wicked Siege, which to date, gave me the most back end reaction in my line up. I was amazed at the difference between the Ulti-Max and Wicked Siege. While the Wicked gives very good down lane reaction, compared to the Ulti, it is a lot smoother. The Ulti has the appearance like someone kicked it towards the pocket. And as with all the C*(System) balls, this ball has a very high carry percentage. One difference is that this ball definitely goes through the pins a lot better than the other C*(Systems).

DISLIKES

The only dislike I have for this ball is when the lanes are a little squirly, it can tend to go too long and not make the strong move that I've come to expect of this ball. I would imagine the new Nexus f(P+F) [Solid] will be a good ball up from this one.

OVERALL

Brunswick has outdone itself with this release. It skids well through the front, controls the mid lane, and makes a better turn in the back than the Wicked Siege, which until this ball, was the most I've seen from Brunswick in a while.

Likes:We drilled with with the mass bias on the opposite side of the thumb to lay the asymmetric core down on its side to make it symmetrical. Could play the right side of lane but a lot of time ran out of gas even with high polish and sometimes did not turn enough to carry the 10 pin

Dislikes: Not enough carry power.
