Title: Damage
Post by: admin on December 31, 1969, 06:00:00 PM
- Coverstock: PowrKoil 18 Pearl
- Color: Red/Blue/Violet Pearl
- Hardness: 76-78
- Factory Finish: 500 Siaair Micro Pad Rough Buff High Gloss Polish
- A few tiny pit holes in the cover stock of the ball are normal
- Weight Block: (14-16#) High RG Performance
- RG max: 2.604
- RG min: 2.559
- RG diff: 0.045
- Average RG: 5.5 of 10
- Hook Potential: 125 (Scale 10-175)
- Length: 115 (Scale 25-235)
- Typical Breakpoint Shape: 90 Angular (Scale Smooth Arc 10-Angular 100)
- Recommended Lane Condition: Medium to Dry Oil
- Description: POWRKOIL COVERSTOCK: The PowrKoil 18 coverstock is a proven performer in the bowling industry. Aggressive in the oil and strong off the dry, PowrKoil 18 is a perennial favorite among all styles of bowlers. The Damage uses a new, larger pearl additive that creates more vivid colors and provides added length and backend reaction.
CORE: The Damage incorporates a new High RG performance core that provides easy length through the heads and mid-lane while maintaining axis rotation for a strong continuous backend motion.
BALL MOTION: With its high gloss finish, the Damage will provide excellent length with a quick response to friction at the breakpoint. The Damage is the highest rated breakpoint shape ball at the Advanced Performance price point from Brunswick and will match up on medium to dry lane conditions for a wide range of bowling styles.
REACTION SETUP: The Damage can be drilled using the standard drilling techniques developed for symmetric bowling balls.
LIGHTWEIGHT ENGINEERING: The unique core shape of each Brunswick ball is used for weights from 14 to 16 pounds. This approach to lightweight ball engineering provides bowlers with consistent ball reaction characteristics across this weight range. The same drilling instructions can be used for 12- and 13-pound balls. This is because Brunswick uses a generic core shape with an RG differential that is close enough to the 14-16 pound shape.

Ball Name - Damage

Bowler Specs
Right Handed
Tweener
15 MPH
Out of the box Surface
Axis 5 3/4 over, 3/16 up

Description - The PowrKoil 18 coverstock is a proven performer in the bowling industry. Aggressive in the oil and strong off the dry, PowrKoil 18 is a perennial favorite among all styles of bowlers. The Damage uses a new, larger pearl additive that creates more vivid colors and provides added length and backend reaction.

Drilling - Pin 5 inches and above ring finger weight hole on axis

Reaction - This ball is just simply a great addition to the Brunswick line.  This ball glides thru the fronts and gets more length than the 4.5 with just as quick a transition.  You will be able to play straighter angles with this ball due to the amazing length.  It gets just as much length as the Avalanche Urethane but with a more aggressive move off the spot.

Overall - Yet another great addition to the Brunswick line.

Thank you to Billy O, rep Brian Bever and all the good folks at Brunswick.

Damage

5" Pin to PAP above fingers
X Hole 2 1/4 down VAL, 7/8" x 3" deep
2000 Sia Air

When I first drilled the Damage, I left it OOB finish and no hole. The flare rings were a little close together for my liking so I added the x hole. The reaction was a little erratic with the shiny cover so I knocked it down to 2000.

The Damage is a must have for the late blocks, high friction surfaces, and broken down conditions. Anyone bowling on old wood, this could be the first ball out of the bag for you!

The cover provides plenty of length and a quick response. The med-high diff helps turn the ball over hard at the breakpoint.

So far, I've had good success on wood lanes, Cheetah, and especially on the burn.

Balls specs:

15lb. 2oz.
2.98 top weight
3 ¾” pin

Drilling Specs: 45 X 4 ½” X 30. This places the pin just above and slightly left of my ring finger. The CG is approx. 1 ½” left of the center of my grip. A 7/8” weight hole is drilled on my PAP only 1 ½” deep just to keep it legal.

With their latest two balls, the Damage and Wicked Siege, Brunswick has raised the RG of the cores to promote easier length through the heads and a quicker response to friction on the backend. The Damage has a RG Max of 2.61 and a RG Min of 2.57. The coverstock used is their successful PowrKoil 18 with a larger pearl additive for added length and backend reaction.
This ball is definitely going to see a lot of use. The Damage will fit the bill when the Slingshot is a bit weak and the Python is reading too early and not strong enough off the end of the pattern. The Damage glides through the front of the lane and doesn’t over read the mids either. It saves its axis rotation for a quick and continuous backend motion. Pin carry is outstanding because of the increased entry angle.
I have only been able to use the ball on two different house patterns on synthetics to this point. I can’t compare it to any recent Brunswick releases. The motion is very different and allows me to free up my arm swing as I don’t have to be concerned with the ball reading the lane too early.
If you’ve been rolling Brunswick equipment recently and are looking for another piece to the lane play puzzle, get this ball now! If you are not rolling Brunswick equipment because you think the equipment rolls too early, get this ball now! You will not be disappointed.

The new Damage from brunswick is just the ball I was waiting for.

Ball #1 Drilled 45x4.5x45 with xhole on PAP
I wanted this ball to get the good length and a decent pop and that is what I achieved. Even with this fairly aggressive drilling for me the ball clears the fronts effortlessly. Reads the midlane well and comes off the spot rather aggressive. I wouldn't call it a flip but a very strong arc.

Ball #2 drilled 45x4x70 with xhole drilled on a line from center of grip through CG on my VAL.
This is the same layout as my favorite Python. Both balls clear the fronts and are smooth off the spot. The difference comes with the overall hook. I have seen about a 3 and 2 less hook out of the Damage. My intentions with this ball is for the fresh on shorter patterns. This way the ball wil clear the fronts and I can still control the back part of the lane.

The Damage is a great addition to the Brunswick line. The ball does need friction for proper reaction. Those that are speed dominant will need to add surface for this ball. Those that are rev dominant will love this ball.

Bowler Stats:
MPH: ~18.5 off hand
RPM: 350-375
Axis Rotation: 30-40 degrees
Axis Tilt: 13-15 degrees
PAP: 4 7/8” right, 0” up/down

Ball Layout:
40* by 5.5 by 50*   no hole
(pin is about an inch over my bridge)
OOB surface

Lanes:
Brunswick Pro-Anvilane
Kegel Kustodian
A22 oil

Patterns Tested:
39’ medium-dry THS
PBA Shark
PBA Cheetah

I’d like to start by saying the following: This is already one of my favorite balls that I’ve ever thrown and is probably the best ball I’ve ever thrown value wise for its price point (except maybe the Slingshot at its value). In my opinion, it’s almost impossible to beat a ball that has any form of PowerKoil 18 coverstock.

Now I wanted this ball to do one thing, to go long with a controllable but very strong backend reaction. The layout I used is a favorite of mine when I want the ball to get down the lane but still have plenty of pop off of the end of the pattern. I can tell the difference that the new core and the larger pearl additive in the coverstock has made in the ball’s ability to ignore the front part of the lane while being very responsive on the backend. Possibly the most continuous angular ball I’ve thrown.

On a fresh 39’ medium-dry THS, the Damage offered tons of miss room, especially to the right. Starting out, the ball was most comfortable with a laydown of 24 out to 7-8-9 at the breakpoint. I have a problem sometimes on this THS getting the ball far enough down lane, however that was nowhere near a problem for this ball. The Damage was able to skid through the fronts effortlessly and read the lanes at the correct distance downlane. Once it reached the breakpoint, the ball showed a very, very strong movement off of the dry but was still controllable and consistent shot to shot. If sent out a little wide, the Damage still read the pattern and came roaring back to the pocket. Everyone, including myself, was amazed and where this ball would come back from. If tugged inside, the high RG core and the pearl cover combined to allow the ball to have extra hold room before taking over, and letting the ball corner enough to still slap out the corner pins. Moving 5 boards outside with more speed, the ball was able to ignore even more of the heads, while still having a controllable yet aggressive breakpoint. As the pattern broke down a bit, I could move all the way up to 11 boards further inside with absolutely no loss of carry. Bowlers who play a lot of inside angles are sure to find a spot in their bag for this ball.

Compared to the Avalanche Black/Green with a similar layout, I noted that the Damage is about 2 boards stronger with basically all of that strength coming from the backend reaction. The Avalanche has a smoother shape when compared to the Damage and the Avalanche started rolling approximately 3 feet sooner with the Damage being slightly more continuous. Compared to the Slingshot (Black/Silver drilled 135* by 4” by 70*) the Damage was approximately 5 boards stronger with most of that coming once again from the backend reaction. Also, the Slingshot was less continuous overall (much due to the stronger pin placement). Compared to the C-System 4.5 (drilled 70* by 5” by 80*), the Damage was about 4 boards weaker overall with a even a slightly stronger response at the breakpoint than the 4.5 (surely due to the pin-down layout on the 4.5).

A fresh PBA Shark pattern had way too much length and volume to start out with this ball, but the Damage is a great choice for when you have to close up your angles and move inside as the pattern breaks down. Despite the pattern length, the Damage was able to read the track from other players and make its strong move in plenty of time to take care of any corner pins. That’s what I’d say set this ball different from the rest. The ability to maintain a carry percentage from the inside part of the lane is crucial as patterns wear down. That reason alone would make me keep this ball in my bag.

I couldn’t help but play around with this ball on the PBA Cheetah pattern. Typically, I love playing as straight and as close to the gutter as my speed and rev rate allow. With the Avalanche Urethane, that’s usually a small swing from a laydown of 4 out to 2. The Damage was way too strong for this line of attack but did provide me the ability to play a bank shot with a laydown of 11 out to 2 or 3. Although I’m not as comfortable playing bank shots like this on short patterns, the Damage was definitely able to give me a look that no one else had, and provided a great alternative line for when the Urethane Avalanche was meeting a few carry issues.

Overall, I’d say that this is my new favorite ball in the bag. It gives me a look that I’ve never had before and it does it at a ridiculously valuable price point. Those looking for a weaker version of the 4.5, but still a similar reaction shape, will love this ball in my opinion. Bowlers with trouble getting the ball downlane will find this ball as a must-have with its pearl cover and high RG core (just be sure to still use weaker layouts). More competitive bowlers that experience a wide range of patterns will like the look they see with this ball for when patterns break down. Personally, I know that it’s a ball that will have its special place in my bag for a while with its strong move off the spot and that it’d be a great addition to virtually everyone’s bag.

Damage #2

4.5 Pin to PAP
Pin below Fingers
2000 Sia Air

After seeing the length with the high pin and OOB finish, I hit this with 2000 before I drilled it to be able to use it earlier in the block. The aggressive pin and the PK18 cover were perfect for Cheetah tonight.

A little scuff on the cover tames the over/under and the 4.5" pin gets the ball turning a little sooner. This gets you more back end than the black/green Avalanche and a later breakpoint than the Rampage.

This is the best ball Brunswick has made at this price point. I will be ordering more Damages for sure!!

Pin to PAP: 5 1/2 inches
CG to PAP: 4 3/4 inches
Pin Orientation: Up
Weight hole: No hole

Knowing this ball was going to get down the lane and turn, I decided not to fight that and drill it as such. With this drilling, it put the pin directly above my bridge and allows this ball to use all of its potential. The ball was a little too long, for a THS at least, but worked great in the later block and especially on second shift where the heads were gone and there was a significant amount of carry down.

As for a tournament ball, this ball loves the medium length patterns and higher friction surfaces for fresh shots, and just makes the lanes earlier later in the block. It compliments the Wicked Siege very well and when the Wicked starts turning a little too hard in the ball, this ball will definitely give you the added length need to combat friction. A must get for anyone looking for that added length and recovery!

Ball Review: Damage
Date: 11/13/2010

Bowler Information:

Initial ball Speed: 17-17.5 mph
Tilt: 15 Degrees
Axis Rotation: 35 Degrees
Rev Rate: 300-340 RPMs

Coverstock - Powrkoil 18 Pearl
RG min - 2.559
Differential - .045

Ball 1:
Pin to PAP - 4 1/2”
Degree From VAL: 70"
Vertical Pin Orientation: Down
Drill Angle - 50"
Balance hole on the VAL about halfway between the thumb and the midline.

Surface Preparation: OOB

The Damage is the new long and strong ball in Brunswick's new midprice ball series. This ball will be the first in the series replacing the snake balls. The Damage is the skid-snappiest mid-priced brunswick ball I have thrown to date. The ball is longer and more sideways than the the Python or the Rattler. It is also more violent at the breakpoint than the C System v4.5. The ball has matched up well for me so far in situations where I need to open up the lane slightly and the lanes have been dried out some and heavily transitioned. The ball is 3 boards longer than my pin up C System 4.5 and is stronger at the breakpoint. It is plenty snappy for me with a slower response layout and I'm not sure I would ever need one to be longer and stronger than this one already is. If you need a quick response ball with good length on medium to drier lane conditions, it's time to look at doing some Damage!

OOB surface, pin 5 1/2 from PAP which put it above the ring finger - and no hole.  Wow.  This is the ball reaction I've been waiting a long time for.  There are a lot of weaker cover balls out there that allow you to square up, but the vast majority of them allow that shot due to a very weak cover / core combination.  This ball is in another league.  I love Big B balls, but we all know what they are known for.  High rev - and early rev cores.  This is in a different category all together.  This ball just GLIDES through the heads - and I can't stress that enough.  GLIDES.  Here is the difference though.  With the higher RG core - it has an extremely strong back end, yet controllable.  I've yet to leave a half / weak 10 pin with it.  This is an unbelievable ball reaction at this price point.  Keep it up guys.

Layout: Label 4" pin

The Damage is going to be a great ball for shorter patterns and most typical house shots. The damage is very clean through the fronts and has a very controlable strong arcing motion off the breakpoint. This ball will not over react off the friction. This is a great choice for any house shot league bowler. Throw this ball outside of the second arrow and watch it strike all night long. Throw this ball and watch as people take notice of how you can control the lanes as they breakdown.  Definitely a winner!

Review:
Great look, Proven cover Powerkoil 18. Another great mid priced ball by Brunswick. Just like everyone else is writing, this ball is so readable and hits so hard, just a fantastic choice for medium to dry lanes. The Damage for me is 3 and 2 weaker than the Wicked Siege but no difference in power. Shot 703 1st three games on the ball. Handles breakdown very well. Brunswick continues to be the leader in Mid Price Performance.

Thanks for reading my review.

Title: Re: Damage
Post by: RSalas on November 27, 2010, 02:53:53 PM
Layout:

Pin 5” from PAP, above ring finger
CG on midline, ¾” to right of grip center
No XH

Initial Surface Preparation:

Box finish

Purpose:

To give me an option for drier mediums, to fill the gap between the Anaconda/Revolver and the Avalanche Slide/Avalanche Urethane.  Even though my Slide is drilled relatively strong (4” from PAP), it isn’t quite strong enough to make the corner on conditions that have broken down to where the Snakes are burning too soon in front or in the midlane.

Why this ball?

I was intrigued by the combination of the higher-RG core in the Damage and the use of a new coverstock additive to promote length, along with the highly polished factory surface preparation.  Given these attributes, I felt that the Damage would give me a beneficial reaction on conditions where I needed a cleaner look in front and recovery down lane when I had to play more away from the pocket.

Observations:

My Damage came with a pin just shy of 3 ¼”, so I opted for a pin-above layout, with the pin 5” from my PAP.  This layout has always been good for me when I’ve needed a balance between control through the front part of the lane and power at the breakpoint.

The first time I threw the Damage was on a fresh house condition at a center with a new SPL lane surface.  On the fresh, the Damage did a good job of blending out the abrupt front-to-back reaction that this center tends to exhibit.  As the condition began to blend, though, the ball began to labor down lane.  Towards the end of the session, though, the front of the lane began to transition more rapidly, so I took the Damage back out of the bag, and it allowed me to move closer to the friction, but still play a more direct line to the pocket.

The Damage was right at home on a second-shift condition at a center with older Pro Anvilanes.  On this condition, the ball was extremely clean through the burn in the front part of the lane, and made a nice move in back, with a strong presence through the pin deck that reminded me of the C-(System) 2.5 and v4.5.  As the condition continued to transition, the Damage didn’t back away from the challenge, as it stayed clean through the front and midlane, and remained strong in back.

Conclusions:

I don’t typically expect to see versatility from a ball that is designed to be weaker, but the Damage has given me just that.  The Damage will be effective as long as there is a well-defined area of friction, either to the outside or down the lane.  I’ve found that I can stay more direct and bump the oil line with it when I need to, as well as give the ball room and go from oil to dry, and chase the oil inside without sacrificing recovery.

The Damage will be a good alternative to the reactive Avalanches for those bowlers who could benefit from having added strength at the break on drier medium conditions.  Tournament players will find that the Damage will be a good complement to the Avalanches, particularly on conditions that require the bowler to play a particular zone of the lane even after transition, or to hook around the push spot during late blocks.

If you're looking for a ball that will give you control on a drier shot or one that has backends that are just flying (short patterns), this is definitely the ball you need. The Damage has a 500 grit surface under two different kinds of polish (rough buff and high gloss) which allows the ball to still hit even with carry down. A must have for the Cheetah or similar patterns.... Thanks Brunswick, for filling another hole in our arsenals.

Brunswick Damage
The 500 Micro Pad with a high gloss polish finish makes the Damage the perfect benchmark ball. The smooth down lane reaction makes this my ball of choice on a medium to dry house shot.  Even during late transition, this ball always finds its way to the pocket, by holding when you pull it, and recovering when you miss out.  This Damage would be a tough ball to do without, during breakdown, on any house shot condition.

Likes:  I was looking for a ball to essentially replace my aging Brunswick Swarm.  The Swarm had been my go-to ball when the fronts burned up and I needed something to get really downlane and turn the corner with power.  I have had great success with the Swarm and a confidence in the ball that makes it difficult to retire.  But the Damage appears to be the perfect replacement and addition to my arsenal.  I went with a pretty long pin because I needed length out of the ball on drier lanes.  The results have been very uplifting.  I get great length and a powerful turn towards the pins.  Striking power is not sacrificed with this rock.  Took it to a 3-pair, 3-game, 3-condition event yesterday.  One pattern was the house shot, one was a Kegel challenge series pattern and the other a PBA Experience pattern.  Prior to starting, you do not know what pattern you are on so you have to figure it out with only a few shots of practice.  From the first two shots, I knew we were starting on the Sport pattern.  The middles were superhooky, and the outside was unplayable.  My Alpha Max and my Wicked were too strong by a longshot.  I quickly set up in the Damage standing on 35 rolling over 4th arrow and made the pattern look easier than it was.  The ball made it through the superhooky zone and turned the corner on the backpart of the lane a hit the pins hard.  The manager actually asked me if we were on the house shot after throwing a few strikes with the Damage!  When we got to the Challenge Series pattern, the middles weren't hooking as much and I was able to move right with the Damage and continue striking.
I've had this ball drilled to be more condition specific and not my first ball out of the bag.  From all indications, it does exactly what it is supposed to do.  It gives me a ball that will allow me to finally retire my Swarm and it fits really well in between my Slingshot and Wicked Siege.  The ball effortlessly gets downlane, storing energy for the strong move towards the pocket.  Really really like this ball!

Dislikes:  I'm not sure I have any dislikes with this ball.  It does what it's supposed to do.  Predictably clean through the fronts and middles and strong on the backend.

I got the Damage for when the lanes break down and I need something that goes further down the lane before making the move to the pocket.  I drilled it with a stronger backend since it is a higher RG ball to give it a little help when it reaches the friction.  This ball is good on fresh as well and allows me to play straighter even with my higher rev rate.  I really like the reaction of this ball when everything else is hooking too much and starting up too early.  This ball really makes a strong arc type of move when it reaches the friction but doesn't make a quick turn when reaching the friction.  I really like the Damage with the OOB surface and haven't made any adjustments.  This ball is clean through the heads, and strong on the backend.  This is another great ball in the Advance Performance lineup.

First impression is that people who are not used to seeing a stronger backed reaction from Brunswick will be pleasantly surprised.  This is a ball that can ideally be used for lighter conditions or when the lanes have opened up a bit.  It can cover quite a few boards on the right condition.  For some who consider "weak" equipment as those which do not cover boards, you would be wrong about this.  This ball can help open up the lane later on in a set, for example, after using a Wicked Siege.  Say after the Wicked Siege starts to be a bit too strong and moving deeper leaves flat corners, you can pick up the Damage in the same area on the lane and get more length and excellent backend recovery.
It may not be ideal for a fresh shot as you may have to deal with over/under if the volume is medium or higher.

Title: Re: Damage
Post by: Brandon Riley on April 06, 2011, 01:26:21 AM
Damage pin above the bridge (5"), small weight hole 2" right of the thumb.  Box finish

The purpose of this ball is to go damn long and have enough backend to carry from deep angles when the lanes get toasty.  I wanted something that I could get similar to slightly less length from than my Avalanche slide which is a personal favourite of mine.  What happened was that the damage surprised me and actually is as if not longer than the slide, but provides a little extra performance on the backend to take out the 10 when playing deep angles when it is super dry.  First tournament out I shot 1040/4 with it in games 10-13 on wood that was absolutely fried.

I'd recommend the damage to anybody encountering a soft, dry surface, especially if they are speed challenged and need help getting the ball down lane.  Its a performance bowling ball that is very controllable with tremendous length.

COMMENTS

Likes:  LOTS of length, predictable backend

Dislikes:  Who would throw a high rg pearl in heavy oil anyways?

COMMENTS
Drill pattern: 41/2 from pap. Box finish.

Wow when i first tried the Damage out it was on 2nd shift house pattern. This ball was able to get through the frints with no problem and had a lot of backend left to get the ten oin out form deeper angles. When taken to 1000 abralon this ball rolls earlier but still gets through the fronts fine with it picking up in the mid lane a little sooner than with polish on it.

Brunswick really hit the mark with this one as well as othercurrent bowling balls. Don't miss out on what great products brunswick is coming out with!!

Likes: Lots of strikes and there is a lot of pop in the back with this ball.

15# 3oz top 2-3pin
Drilled pin over bridge cg swung out
Surface is OOB
low revs ball speed avg is 16mph
I bought the damage, because I'd always wanted to try something with a strong backend on a dry house shot. To take advantage of what this ball was built for, I had it drilled pin above the bridge cg right and a little lower than ring. All I can say is wow.  This is the first ball I was unable to bowl a strike with. The ball carried down beautifully making a late and very shallow turn toward the pocket. I was under the impression that it would make a sharp angular turn, but that wasn't the case at all. Then, even when I hit the pocket, the ball hits like a wet noodle leaving the strangest formations I've seen. I tried moving over a couple boards to the right, increasing and decreasing ball speed, adding more hand, but nothing seems to work. My best guess is that this is a ball for crankers, and I'm simply incapable of putting enough revs on it to get the desired results. As it stands this ball has proven itself as an excellent spare ball picking up splits and the occasional 10 pin.

SURFACE PREPARATION
PK18 Pearl – how can you go wrong?!!

Mine's at OOB: 500 Siaair Micro Pad; Rough Buff; High Gloss Polish.

LANE CONDITION
THS

BALL REACTION
Length – long.  The high RG core gets it down lane.
Back End – deceptively strong. Ball saves up it's energy for the backend.
Overall Hook – good.  You can play this straight to the pocket or bounce it off the friction.
Midlane Read – great on light to medium. Too much oil and it slides.
Breakpoint Shape – very strong arc

COMMENTS
Carry – excellent.
Likes - everything
Dislikes – it knocked my Gold Rhino Pro out of the bag (lol)
Other -

I had the good fortune to bowl with Ronnie Russell at the Pro-Am at Earl Anthony's Dublin Bowl in February 2011. Ronnie is a super nice guy and seeing as he is Brunswick-sponsored he really got a kick out of the Gold Rhino Pro I was throwing.

Some time during the second game he brings this guy over and tells him to check out my ball. He asks me if I am the guy who posted a figjam about my Gold Rhino at BR and I said yes. And then he tells me he's Brunsnick.

So we got to chatting about the old Big B classics and talking about their newer stuff. I told him how I wanted a Gold Rhino ever since I saw his video of the ball on his web site (http://www.brunsnick.com/rhino_gold.html).

A few minutes later he comes back and drops a box on me with a brand new Damage in it! I open the box and he wrote, "It's not a Gold Rhino Pro but it'll still match up" on it. What an unbelievably cool thing that was.

For those of you who liked the Gold Rhino Pro then this ball is for you.  It is a great 1-2 punch with the Massive Damage.  Between those two balls I can cover anything from light to fresh oil.  Both are laid out the same way and give me the same shape, the same strong backend, and surprisingly strong carry.  The Damage is all you need for light to medium oil.  Check out my review of the Massive Damage here:
