Title: Vintage Danger Zone
Post by: BallReviews-scodaddy21 on February 03, 2016, 12:08:43 PM
Description: Through the Brunswick Vintage line of bowling balls they have brought back yet another legend, the Danger Zone. To celebrate this iconic ball's 20 year anniversary Brunswick has combined the Vintage Lightbulb Low RG core with a newer coverstock, the PK 2016 (a modern version of the PowrKoil 18).  This combination brings the retro Danger Zone motion of skidding through the heads while saving axis rotation for the backend to bring that memorable Danger Zone reaction to modern lane conditions.

Why are there no posts. Every one should be pumped about this ball. Back in the day I used to have a ton of different Zones. Danger Zone, Red Alert, Command Zone, Command Zone Arc, and needless to say they all were great. I was lucky enough to get my hands on one of the Danger Zones and threw it down the lane last night and my god. If it didn't give me chills from the flashbacks of 15 years ago with the ball motion. Smooth through the front part of the lane and flipped over and went side ways to the pocket. Ok that was exaggeration, not really side ways but really angular and smashed the pocket. I continued to throw a 280 right off the drill press. Only leaving a stone 8 pin.

All I'm saying if you wanna get nostalgic on the lanes pick one of these up when they get released. You will not be disappointed.

The Vintage Danger Zone is just like the hype about it was.  It rolls just like the orignal Danger Zone.  The ball is clean and very continuous through the midlane to the backend.  I laid mine to provide and little bit more length and more angular motion.  This ball to me is gonna be the game changer ball of the year.

Reaction:  It’s back and new and improved.  With its low RG light bulb core and new Solid PK Coverstock this is a must have ball if you liked the original version.
This ball is very clean through the front of the lanes with a continuous back end motion.  It does not quit when it goes through the pins.  It likes to split the 8-9 a lot.  For me this ball allows me to keep my angles straighter and in front of me.  Because of my ball speed, I average 18-19 mph, I had to hit the cover with a little bit of surface to get the reaction that I wanted.  I am currently using 1000 SIAR pad with no polish on it.  I will probably have to tweak this by either adding some polish to it or bringing it up to 2000.  The 1000 worked very well for me but it became too much after game 1 and I had to switch to something with some polish on it.  I have only thrown this on a 41 foot 10:1 house pattern so the oil goes away very quickly especially with surface on the ball.  The out of the box finish will work very well for bowlers with lower ball speed.
Overall:  If you are looking for a ball where you can keep your angles straighter to start this is the ball for you.  Once the lanes break down you will be able to move in and the ball will not quit.  This ball does not lack hitting power and has a very good continuous drive through the pins.

I absolutely love this ball!!!!!!!! For some reason I seem to have really good luck with these light bulb cores. For me this ball gets through the heads with ease and has a nice predictable break point. Its not overly aggressive but it's not weak either. It is a strong kind of smooth. Has good carry. I know it's only been a couple weeks with this ball but I have not left hardly any ten pins with it. This is the type of ball you pull out of your bag first.

I was very excited about re-release of a Danger Zone, and so far I have been impressed with the ball. I was surprised with the overall strength of the ball as well as the response off of the friction. I drilled this ball with the intent of replacing an aging original Diva, and while this ball is a little stronger down lane that the orginal Diva. The motion downlane is still strong and continuous through the pins.

Brunswick Vintage Danger Zone
Bowler Stats:
Speed: 18-19mph
Rev Rate: 400-450mph
Axis Tilt: 7degrees
Axis Rotation: 30-60 degrees
Layout: 45 degrees by 4.5” by 70 degrees (hole 2” down VAL)
Intent: The original Danger Zone was a little bit before my time. Even without the nostalgia in my heart, I knew this was THE ball of the mid to late 1990s. With the updated core and cover, the DZ looked to be an all-purpose ball that would see a lot of play. I went with one of my favorite layouts with this one to help make for an extremely versatile piece.
On the lanes: The DZ is easily one of the most versatile balls I’ve thrown. Low RG cores and solid covers always tend to be very forgiving, more so on fresher patterns. With the DZ, it’s now my benchmark ball and tends to be my go-to on anything remotely around medium-ish length and medium-ish volume. The DZ is the strongest ball in the Vintage line with the LT-48 being a nice complement on the lower side. Just above the DZ I’d place the Melee Hook if you’re looking at the range of solid symmetricals. I have the DZ at about 4 boards stronger than the LT-48 and about 2 weaker than the Melee Hook. The past few weeks this ball has been destroying my house shot. I believe that the DZ is one of the most practical options for house shots. The versatility allows for following the shot throughout the night and will succeed at multiple angles provided that you aren’t on something extremely dry or flooded. Outside of house shots, for those bowlers looking for something on tougher patterns, it’s hard to not have a low RG solid in the bag.
Final Thoughts: The legend has returned and it’s only proper to relive history with this piece. The well-roundedness of the DZ makes for a great value since the ball has such as large window of capability.

I laid out my Vintage Danger Zone with pin up 60X5.25X40 layout.  For me this put the pin above the fingers in the grip line.  I am probably one of a few who bowled during the time of the Original Danger Zone that never owned one, so I can’t say it rolls exactly the same as the one did 20 years ago.  What I can tell you is this ball is very good.  It is a very nice compliment to my Melee Jab’s as a go to ball when my pin down Jab is too early or to flat in the back.  I left the box polish on mine which makes the ball a few feet cleaner and about 3 boards stronger off the spot than the pin down Jab.  It is a little earlier and again 3-4 stronger than my Vintage Gold Rhino Pro.  It is not my go to on fresh with me being a little speed dominant and using the box finish on the ball, but when the lanes start to transition after a few, this ball will see plenty of time during the second and third game of league and in the middle of the block for tournaments.

Likes:  The Danger Zone allows me to play straighter through the heads with a perfect read of the friction.  Not too angular, yet not lazy either.  So far carry has been very good.  Very few corner pins!  The polished black cover looks great on the lane.  This one reminds me of how the original reacted on patterns of 20 years ago.  LOVE IT!!

Dislikes:  Nothing to dislike.

The Danger Zone Vintage is an updated version of the original Danger Zone that was wildly successful in years past.  The last version was before my time but if it was half as good as this one it must have been pretty darn good.  This ball is the symmetrical piece most successful tournament bowlers are looking for.  It has good length, a smooth strong read down lane, and is very consistent. You can play inside with it, outside with it, and anywhere in between.  This ball has already proven to be a good option on our house shot and at a local sport shot tournament.  I use it a step down from my melee hook.  It hooks a few boards less and has a little better length.  If you missed out on it before don't miss out now.  Get in the Zone with the new Vintage Danger Zone and enjoy the versatility of the new Brunswick technology!

The latest addition to the vintage line is the Danger Zone. It has a very similar shaped light bulb core to the original, but the coverstock has been updated to handle today's slicker oils. The motion of the ball has a very similar shape to the original with a stronger arcing motion. I have used this ball for the 3rd game of league when they transition and I need a smoother reacting ball. I have also used this ball on a flatter sport patter which allowed me to play straighter angles with strong continuation. It would be a good ball when the Melee hook is too strong and you don't want to mover farther left to open up your angles. If the box surface is too clean or too angular, it would work well at 2000 or 4000. If you liked the original, you won't be disappointed with the new Vintage Danger Zone!

Here is a video of me throwing it:

I don't think I've had a better benchmark ball in a long time.  This ball is so predictable and versatile, really makes you feel like you're back in time throwing the original version.  Although, its cover is modified to reflect modern oil volumes and viscosity, the symmetric core allows the ball to roll very true and consistent across a variety of styles.

Mine is drilled pin below ring finger, out of the box finish, and I've used it on sport patterns (PBA World Championship, Boardwalk, Autobahn), and USBC Blue with equal success.  This is a MUST ball for any fan of the Brunswick line, or for anybody who had success with the original.

This is a ball i have been waiting on.  I am not old enough to know how great it was to throw the original danger zone that everyone loved.  But with this ball, I get to see why everyone loved it so much.  I have heard so much about how this ball compares to the ball of old with today conditions.  I got a pin up layout and the ball is super clean.  To me its a compliment to an LT-48 for me but its like an LT-48 on steroids.  Its sooner and stronger than an LT-48 and hits like a truck.  I love mine on Medium conditions the most or when the lanes break down.

Brunswick Danger Zone (http://www.bowlwithbrunswick.com/balls/detail/danger-zone/)
40 x 4.5 x 70 (OOB Surface)

Personal Stats:
400-450 RPM
18-20 MPH
PAP - 5 5/8" over, 1" up
Axis Tilt - Estimated 8-12 Degrees
Current League Average: 238

Intended Use:
I picked a smooth pin-down layout to compliment the ball. I was looking for a nice solid bench-mark type motion out of this ball.

Reaction:
Smooth is exactly what I got from this ball. The cover is relatively clean, but the motion in the back of the lane is not overly responsive. Smooth, controllable and easy to read.

Overall:
This ball is my first ball out of the bag on medium length/volume patterns - it's easy to read and gives me a nice smooth benchmark motion to move off of.

LANE CONDITION

Length:38 ft

Volume: medium, second shift

Type (THS, Sport Pattern etc): THS

COMMENTS

Likes: The strong continuous arc was exactly the shape I was looking for out of it…the out of the box coverstock is stronger than expected and I had to tune it with a higher grit and a touch of polish to tame it a little.  This ball drives through the pins great…not as much as some of the recent asymmetric balls I have recently thrown, but it certainly has no issue with dying on the backend and leaving the corner pin.
The versatility of this ball should make it a favorite in the bag, as the coverstock is tunable and the shape produced gives a combination that will fit most bowling styles and gives the ability to play much of the lane when necessary.  On the traditional house shot (THS) this ball will likely become your benchmark to read the lanes.  Very solid ball for light to medium oil and all skill levels.

Dislikes: had a bit of track wear faster than expected, although it didn't effect the reaction noticeably

As with everyone else I was so amazed to hear about this ball. I couldn't wait for it to get delivered so I could put holes in it.

Brunswick did great with getting the shape to be very similar to the original 20 years ago.

I drilled mine 40x4.5x70. Typically this type of layout is too early for me and doesn't go thru the pins well. Well with the advancement in the cover technology Brunswick has made I'm now able to use this type of layout and it not puke on me at the pins. This ball is the strongest yet in the Vintage line. It is usually the first ball out of my bag. Very predictable and readable. I will be drilling more these in the near future

The Legend is back! The Danger Zone is the new arrival in the Vintage line. Same ball motion, same performance with the latest technology. The vintage light bulb core is wrapped with the new PK2016 coverstock. For those who had the chance to throw the original, you’ll recognize the same feeling the original provided.
Mine was a test. I drilled it pin over the finger with a Motion hole. The result is a ball that goes through the front very easily with lot of control on the backend. It complements perfectly my Ridiculous, whose pin down. For now, I tried several surface but the best result was at 4k. It’s about 5-3 left stronger for me than my vintage Rhino Pro Gold.
For the one who wants a glimpse of the greatness that was the original Danger Zone, the new version will provide you the same feeling the original has given to you.

Coverstock is easy to clean with, very adaptive....

Laid my Vintage Danger Zone out 60x4.5"x45 (pin over ring) with no hole with the intent of it being an alternative to my pin up Diva as a benchmark ball for fresh medium lanes.
Out of the box, skidded through the front with ease in league and revved up like a true Zone ball in the midlane, yet never seemed to traction down the lane the way I expected.  My misses right rolled up and struck, but misses in were almost always 2pins.  Part of it was my eyes deceiving me in seeing the ball rev up with such a heavy roll that I expected to see more hook, thus I was standing too deep.  I also think that the ball was just a little too shiny given the volume on which I was bowling.  Realistically, this is about what my Danger Zone that I loved so much in juniors would have done on today's oils.

The next week I removed the polish with 4k and got closer to the track for one of my best looks on fresh all season.  The Danger Zone rolled up really early and was very smooth off the back end, allowing me to stay further right than usual, yet remain aggressive with my hand but not worrying about over reaction.  The angles were calm, yet effective and I had lots of room without having to cross many boards.

The best look that I have had yet with my Danger Zone was after sanding it down to 1k last weekend for a tournament on 35' 32ml 2.1-1 and had 258-265 games 2-3 staying right.  The early roll plus the soft move off the backend was perfect for reading the help in the heads, yet limiting my move off the backend for great carry that shorter, flatter pattern.

In terms of overall hook, the Danger Zone hooks a couple boards less than my pin up Original Diva (still and forever my benchmark) all due to movement on the backend.  In terms of shape, the Danger Zone is closest to my pin in ring Hooligan Taunt, but the lower rg core and solid cover allow the Zone to handle a little more oil.  The Zone fills a nice gap in my bag for medium/shorter patterns where I want to stay closer to the track with safer angles off the friction.

As a brand, Brunswick has changed their shapes from the early/rolly Zone type shape to being much cleaner through the fronts and stronger off the back and I appreciate that Brunswick has gone back to their roots in terms of reaction with this ball.  Bowlers with lower tracks or those who prefer to play the track will love this ball, but it will also be a nice option for higher rev players to straighten out their angles, particularly on shorter patterns.

The Danger Zone is all that it is said to be.  I was fortunate enough to throw the Original Danger Zone back in 1996.  It was one of my favorite balls.
Today's version with the tweaked PowerKoil 18 coverstock gave me the length I saw in the Original with a stronger arc motion on the back.
I have the Vintage Danger Zone about 4 boards stronger than my Vintage LT48 and  3 more than my Diva Pearl. The Diva Pearl is my BenchMark Ball until now. The Vintage DangerZone will be my new BenchMark Ball .  It's cleaner in the front and stronger arc on the back that my Diva Pearl.
This is a ball that will let you close your angles without losiing any reaction  .  The DangerZone is a great ball for lower ball speed players but higher ball speed player might want a little surface on the ball.
I highly recommend the Vintage DangerZone to anyone that is looking for that special Benchmark ball to add in their bag when the pattern tends to break down.

My name is Doug Cutler and I am a DV8 Regional Staffer.  I am left handed and my ball speed is between 15-17 mph. I remember how I drilled the my original Danger Zone and I drilled the New Danger the same.  I had the pin just above my ring finger and the CG kick out just a little to the left.  I had a 2-3" pin. The surface I took the original surface and just took a 4000 pad and lightly took the shine off. The Danger Zone is all that it is said to be. I was fortunate enough to throw the Original Danger Zone back in mid 90s. It was one of my favorite ball and I had 2 of them.Today's version with the tweaked PowerKoil 18 coverstock gave me the length I saw in the Original with a stronger arc motion on the back.
I have the Vintage Danger Zone about 5 boards stronger than my Diva XOXO and 3 more than my DV8 Vandal. The DV8 Vandal was my Benchmark Ball until now. The Vintage DangerZone is my new Benchmark Ball now. It's cleaner in the front and stronger arc on the back that my Vandal.
This is a ball that will let you close your angles without losing any reaction . The Danger Zone is a great ball for lower ball speed players but higher ball speed player might want a little surface on the ball. The Danger Zone is very controllable and predictable, and that is what I love to see.
I highly recommend the Vintage Danger Zone to anyone that is looking for that special Benchmark ball to add in their bag when the pattern tends to break down. So get to your local pro shop and get your Danger Zone Today. You will not be disappointed. #brunswickbowling #vintagedangerzone

The new Vintage Danger Zone has been a ball that I’ve been waiting to throw for quite a bit. Once I heard it was being produced I was like a little kid in a candy store again! I drilled mine identical to my Melee Jab, pin under the middle finger, cg under the ring (my CG is right above the thumb, thumb is drilled to China haha!) It lives up to the legacy in every way. Very clean through the front with a smooth transition on the backend. I’ve been using it on the fresh on lanes with a bit of friction or really clean backends where bowling balls might tend to snap too hard. It allows me to keep my angles relatively closed without giving up pocket carry. It’s great as the lead-in for my Jab when I need to open my angles eventually, and we all know how good that ball is. Another great piece in the Brunswick Vintage line!

Brunswick Danger Zone

I waited to drill a Danger Zone until I got to see them in person. Well, after selling out of them, more than once, and getting beat down in brackets by everyone using it... I decided to drill one up. I drilled mine 40/5/35 to leave me enough side weight to tweak the layout with a balance hole (didn't need to). Hats off to Brunswick on this Vintage line release. They nailed this one! Clean through the fronts with ample midlane and continuous down lane motion. This ball is a house shot killer. I've been able to play multiple angles on the different house patterns I see. It's always the first ball out of my bag and, on most nights, the only ball that comes out to play. If you had one 20 years ago, you need to drill one of these, it's that good. If you were too young, or just didn't have one in your bag 20 years ago... GET ONE! Seriously, you don't want to miss this one.

This ball gives great length and is very controllable down lane with excellenct continuous motion through the pins. Great for use on medium patterns and is definitely a benchmark piece. ENJOY!!

I drilled mine 75 x 4 1/2 x 35, putting the pin above the fingers.
I wanted my drilling to match the characteristics of this ball.  The great job Brunswick did was improve the successful PowerKoil 18 coverstock and combined it with a bulb shape low RG core.  I think consumers will be surprised at the high performance level of this vintage ball.  The Danger Zone easily clears the fronts, and when it enters the end of the oil pattern uses its stored energy to provide a strong continuous ball motion through the pins.  Brunswick has been killing it with the release of the Vintage line and this might be the best performing ball of all them.

Ball Review: Vintage Danger Zone
Ball Weight: 15 lbs
Pin 3-4
Top 2.5

Bowler Stats:
Left handed
rev rate 425
pap 5 left 3/4 up

The Vintage Danger Zone from Brunswick is the first ball out of my bag on a house shot.  I drilled my Danger Zone 55x5x60 and this lay out gives me a ball roll that blends out the house shot without sacrificing back end continuation.   Being a high rev lefty there are plenty of times while bowling on a high friction house shot where I'm forced to play 4th arrow or deeper with a lot of these bowling balls out today;  with the danger zone I'm able to play straighter and do not have to ball down, the danger zone is my first and only ball out of my bag on league nights where I'm bowling on a house shot...
If you are looking for a bowling ball to use on a typical league shot that you can start and end the night, I strongly recommend you consider the Vintage Danger Zone

The Danger Zone is my new favorite benchmark ball. It is a smooth controllable reaction that really hits the pins hard. I use this ball to figure out what the lanes are doing and I often choose what ball to throw after using this one first. This ball is great on most conditions with the except of long heavy oil patterns. It is a great ball to start out with in league on a typical house pattern. Everybody needs to have one of these in their bag. Stop by your local pro shop and pick one up today.
