Zone Classic
« on: December 31, 1969, 06:00:00 PM »
Technology
Zone Classic features an inner core shape which is new, but familiar. Start with the classic Danger Zone shape, then stretch it laterally to create asymmetry. Keep stretching until you create a highly significant built in Preferential Spin Axis (PSA). Add the PSA locator pin and you have the new Zone Classic core, an Ultra Low RG design combining the proven image of Zone with Brunswick’s patented PSA core technology.

Next add Activator Coverstock, the same coverstock used on the original Inferno, clean through the fronts, great mid-lane recovery, hard arcing backend, unprecedented durability. Factory finished with High Gloss Polish, the purple pearlized coverstock complements the Ultra Low RG Core to deliver an aggressive but forgiving ball reaction that matches up on medium-dry to medium-oily lane conditions.

Reaction Characteristics
Out of the Box: With its high-gloss finish, the Zone Classic will match up well on medium-dry to medium-oily lane conditions.

When dulled: The Zone Classic’s hooking action will increase and its arc will become more even which creates a better match-up for oily lane conditions and helps to smooth over/under reactions seen on wet/dry lane conditions.

PAP: 5 X 3/8 up (right hand)
Layout: Pin above Middle finger (negetive)
Pin distance: 3-4 inches on both
Mass Bias(PSA): 2 inches right of thumb hole
Style: Med/High rev rate
Ball Speed: 16.5 mph

I drilled this as a ball change fron my Scorchin Inferno. I must say I was pleasantly surprised.  I threw it and it went real long but hooked very sharply.  I hit the surface with 2000 grit wet sand-paper to take off the sheen.  It rolls even better now!!!  I stood on 30 with my left foot, threw inbetween 3rd and 4th arrow, and used about 10 for my breakpoint, and smash!!!  It carries really, really well!  I threw it the last game of league on Fri night and shot 235 with a 6 bagger.

I recommend this ball for anyone with above average revs with med to high ball speed.  The coverstock is surprisingly manageable too.  So use your imagination when laying one out.

Thanks, Matt at CCT Pro Shop

Hey the Zone Classic is a great ball... I had my ball drilled to long down the lane. I didn't think I was going to like it but as you can probaly tell I like the ball now. I think you could miss you mark by a board or two and it will still find the whole, but yes its a great ball

Zone Classic Green Pin
Pin in 5.25" from PAP below fingers
MB 60 degrees

I know why this ball has been around for so long and is still in the line up. The activator cover with the Assymetrical core is a great match for medium lanes.

I used this for the first time last night on old wood lanes. It was very clean through the front. Which is a plus when the heads are worn like these. The 60 degree layout gave me a strong arcing backend reaction that was easy to control. I have found my new favorite ball for medium dry lanes. I think I'll have to put one in the basement before I can't get them anymore!!!

I belive I have a Zone Classic green pin since there is a green circle on my ball.  This ball has a backend like you would not believe.  The ball goes very long and right at the end it just takes off and hits the pocket at a termendous angle.  It does need some dry boards in order to have a big backend.  When the ball started to hook too much, I could just tilt the ball to the left and give it more side roll to get the ball to slide further down the lane.  Brunswick's specs on the ball are right on the money unlike what I've heard people saying about the Smokin Inferno.

I am a tweener.  The ball is drilled with the pin between the thumb and finger holes and it is close to the wring finger hole.  I got this link from another review, this is the exact same pin location I have in my ball: http://www.bowlingkingdom.com/persimages/userupload/ZCGP.bmp  Sorry, I'm not an expert on pin locations.

Like I said, Brunswick is correct in that it can be used for medium light oil to medium heavy.  I would say the ball works best for a tweener but that's just my opinion.  When the lanes break down this ball can over react just like any high performance ball and that's where a ball like the Ebonite Tornado comes in or Brunswick Grooves.  Adding more side roll can be enough to over come drier lane conditions late in the series as long as there was enough oil to begin with that didn't require side roll.  This ball is very versatile in that you can throw just about any line as long as it's there but again, it can over react off the outside dry boards but you'll likely find at least one game where the shot is absolutely perfect for this ball.

This ball can go straight as an arrow through the midlane, if you give it some side roll, and then just take off and destroy all 10 pins.  The ball can also hook a little in the midlane if you give it some moderate side roll or a forward roll.  The only problem I've had so far is that when you throw the outside line, the ball tends to leave corner pins and sometimes a pocket 7-10.  If you keep it inside of the 5 board, you should be just fine, unless you move way left and throw the ball through the oil, out to the dry on the outside, then back in then it shouldn't over react off the dry.

Also the balls seems to handle carry down ok but not great.  I haven't had this ball very long but when I have bowled with carry down, it still gives you the backend hit unlike an Ebonite Crossfire would.  I do not throw the Crossfire but did throw a Tiger which has the same core and the Tiger had a big backend but lost engery early if the ball rolled too early.  The Zone Classic is like a step up from those other balls that go long and a huge backend because it has more continuation.  Don't get me wrong, you are still going to lose energy, just not as much.

I have to add one more thing to this review.  Here is the best example I can pick out to help you determine whether this is the ball for you.  I bowled on fairly heavy oiled lanes last Thursday.  If I moved way right I could get the ball to come in but didn't have much room for error.  I shot 593.  It didn't seem like the kind of condition this ball is good for.  The Vapor Zone or Strike Zone would probably have been a better ball.  But after the league was over, I bowled on these conditions, I shot 1262 for 5 games and the last 3 games I shot 804!!!  So if there is a fairly good emount of oil out there, maybe you could throw your Ultimate Inferno or your Strike Zone the first 2 games, then pull out your Zone Classic.  However, most of the time in my fall league, since we're the second shift, the Classic Zone is a better ball to start out with.

The bottom line is, if you're a bowler throwing a ball with a weak backend and you would like to see more hit, this is a great ball to absolutely smash the pocket.  But you do need the ball to hit a dry spot on the lane some where.

I have owned lots of balls (such as The One, The Big One, Absolute Inferno and Fear Factor) and needing a light/dry lane condition ball, I got me a Classic Zone Red Pin last Saturday drilled pin besides ring and PSA 2" right of thumb.
Excited about it and bowl Sunday practice = 250, 220,248,256.  Also, I can use it for ten pin just alter my hand position.  Yesterday practice, I rolled 212, and 300 on a fresh shot with strong backend lane.  WOW, THIS IS MY FAVORITE BALL NOW.  GOOD FOR BOWLER WITH SLOW SPEED/HIGH REV.  THANK YOU BRUNSWICK!!!
I LIKE TO GET ME ANOTHER ONE BUT GREEN PIN.

Specs:
15.03lbs
3 inch pin
3 oz top

Layout:
5-5/8 x 5-5/8
Pin over middle finger
MB right next to thumb on right

Review:
Lane Surface: AMF Synthetics
Condition: 26ft backends clean

On this lane condition if i got it in it hooked hard on the backend. I had to play up the 4 board and ride the oil all the way down until it hit the stripped backends. The ball is phenominal. It hits like a truck. The only weakness of this ball with this laid out would be heavy fronts or any type carry down.

The ZC rolls early still. It gets through the heads easily and has a nice arc on the back. I am very impress with this ball. It reacts exactly like how i wanted to. Perfect for medium to dry lanes. Even though it has a low rg core and the Inferno Activator cover stock, it still pushes well down the lane with this particular layout. The ball is versatile and can be tweaked and laid out for any specific conditon.

Good Job Brunswick. Keep up the good work.

FIRST OFF THIS REVIEW IS FOR THE ZONE CLASSIC RED PIN,NOT THE REGULAR ZONE CLASSIC,ONCE AGAIN THE BALL I HAVE IS THE RED PIN VERSION OF THE ZONE CLASSIC.

ok now that i got that out of the way.i have a 15lb zone classic RED PIN that i recently bought on sale from my proshop. my reason for buying this ball that no one seems to like is because i wanted a reactive ball that doesnt hook barely at all...BINGO ive found it. if you need a ball for dry lanes try to find a zone classic RED PIN its a great ball and very cheap i might add. when the heads are burnt up and you're forced to baby the ball deep inside is when this ball comes alive simply because you dont have to baby this ball inside.i bowled a tournament recently and after 4 games of qualifying and 6 of match play i whipped this ball out of my bag and avged 219.6 for the last 4 games of the tourny. i know 219 isnt an awesome avg like you always see on alot of reviews but at the time the avg for the rest of the field was around 185.point made.what makes this ball so great is that it gives you the ability to score when no one else can, thats always a good thing lol. when the lanes are absolutely fried i can play the outside part of the lane easily-about 15 to 5.the ball doesnt take off in the back end it has a very smooth transition off of the back ends. i throw this ball for all of my spares on the right side because i only have to take a little off of the ball and it doesnt move much at all. now on a fresh house shot i wouldnt recommend it. one thing about this ball is that it is very sensative to oil when its fresh. in a way it really doesnt make sense that this ball jumps on fresh oil but when theres practically no oil this ball goes long with smooth backend! so unless you want to get aggrivated and frustrated you should keep it in the bag until you really need it. this ball is kinda confusing in a way on fresh oil, which is why i only throw it for spares. the bottom line is that on dry broken down lanes this ball is AWESOME! as far as hitting power goes i would give it 9 out of 10,it doesnt swish the rack very well but hits strong in the pocket.

I heard so many great things about these new Brunswick balls and decided to give this one a try - and I'm sorry I did.

Had it drilled according to their layout sheet, closest to the layout that says Medium condition, aggressive mid-lane with delayed hook for use on a wide variety of lane conditions.  I am somewhat of a stroker style, but I throw a little harder and have less revs.  This balls has absolutely no hit, no power, and no carry at all.  It hits like a wet noodle.  Leaves lot of garbage.  I have not been able to put this to any good use, not even for spares.

If this is an example of a "great Brunswick ball", I'm going back to my Storm equipment.  My Storm balls explode pins off the deck next to this thing.  What a piece of junk.  Completely useless.

Layout:
   5 x 3 1/2 (mb) pin under fingers

Finish #1:
   1000 grit abralon
As you might expect, early rolling layout, early rolling cover will make for an early rolling ball every time. Maintained predictability, but very very much an arc to the pocket. Fairly versatile but personally left quite a few ten pins with this cover. Just couldn't seem generate enough entry angle to kick it out.

Finish #2:
600 grit wetsand + Brunswick high gloss polish:
Great rolling ball. Not as skid-snappy as you'd expect from a reactive pearl like this, but I think the drilling has a lot to do with that. Overall I'd say it's about average as far as overall hook goes, and very versatile. I can play hard and straight up ten if I want to, or I can move left and slow down and swing it out. Most impressive part is the carry. Seems to carry as long as I hit the pocket. I'll definitely be leaving the polish on this one. Great medium ball.

Get this ball with the rico drill. hands down best ball with rico on it.
I've had 6 balls with the rico drill and this one is my favorite. I have beans sauce on mine and it goes decently long but it arcs soo smooth and strong. perfect for short patterns and THS. Classic Zone + Rico drill = #1!
