Hey all,

My ball driller suggested I get a Brunswick Ringer instead of a DV8 misfit pearl, and I already have a Roto Grip Shatter on order.

How does the Brunswick Ringer compare to both the Misfit and the Shatter?  I'm concerned the Ringer is going to be almost identical to the Shatter.  What do you guys think?

All are very similar. The manufactures intent for each is almost identical. Pick your favorite color of the three and go.

I'd like to add some Youtube video information here.

When watching Tony Ruocco from bowling ball.com videos on Youtube, that the Misfit and the Shatter are almost exactly the same.  I can't tell if Tony is standing any further left at all, but it looks like the same arc.  (Same oil pattern, same bowler each time).

However, the Ringer hooks like a bitch in the backend, which is exactly what I'm looking for.  So maybe the Shatter for dry conditions and the Ringer for medium / medium dry?

I think if you drilled both the same your going to be splitting boards to see a difference.

I can't speak to the other two but the Ringer does hook like it's nobody's business on the backend. Glides through the fronts, revs up in the mids, and then has a controlled explosion. This is a go to ball.

Not trying to start anything, but I just wanted to point out if you weren't aware that bowlingball.com just about always tries to play the same part of the lane for the ball videos, and they drill accordingly.  Tony plays around 4th arrow with everything from the heaviest stuff to a Slingshot.  Make sure you look at the specs they flash up if you're using that for comparison.

Don't waste your money on a Misfit Pearl, but buy a Roto Grip Scream and you'll be happier! I drilled a Misfit pearl for a friend who did ball work for years and he laid it out and I drilled it for him! He loves skid/flip reactions and was disappointed in the Misfit with the bad over/under caused by the core/motor being a lot stronger than the mild coverstock Brunswick/DV8 put on it! The core tries to get the ball to rev up and move, but the cover pushes it to for down the lane and it's to easy to throw through the breakpoint! The same guy had a horrible reaction with his Misfit pearl after the first game and he tried it the start of the second game and was upset. I gave him a insert to fit his thumb/grip-loc and he told him to try my Scream. He played the same line and it come up high. He said he could work with that he threw the next 7 strikes and shot a big game the last game! He gave his Misfit away and bought a Scream for med/light, Hy-Road for med, and Disturbed for med/heavy to heavy oil. He told our DV8 staffer friend that the Scream had the skid/flip he wanted! Just my $.02, Bruce

It probably would have been easy enough to tweak the surface on the MP but someone was lucky enough to get s free ball. Thats a good deal.

I haven't bowled seriously in 24 years.  I pretty much stopped when I was 19, and now I'm 43.  Bowling has changed so much.  Before I just listened to my pro shop guy, I needed the ball that hooked the most at the time (the Columbia Black U-dot and my Blue Hammer) and killed the lanes.

Now, I can't even control a medium / medium-heavy ball, and I have no idea what I'd do with the heaviest oil balls out there.  I guess there are certain oil patterns that would be condusive to it, but my typical house shot right now, there is just no way.

I'll go with both the Shatter (will drill it for the most even arc I can) and then drill the ringer for the flippiest I can.  Maybe that will make a subtle difference depending on how I feel on a particular bowling night.  Thanks much for the comments!

In my experiences, the Misfit Pearl is a true dry lane ball and it needs friction to get the best reaction. If there is a medium to higher volume of oil, the pearl coverstock doesn't grip as well as the other Misfit balls. The Misfit Pearl is good for when the lanes get toasted and you need a ball to clear the front part of the lane.
The Ringer can handle light to medium volumes of oil, and has a strong backend reaction. I drilled mine 65 x 4.5" x 35, and when it reaches friction it doesn't stop. It is stronger than I expected on the back part of the lane, but it is still controllable. It is good for the fresh as well.

I would agree with your decision to get the Ringer. Good luck with it.

Misfit Pearl is the most angular ball at that pricepoint for any brand. Period. Like Brandon says, it does need friction to go, but when it does, it flips hard.

Ringer has a little less hook overall compared to the Misfit Pearl, revs up just a little more midlane and it's strong off the spot. It reminded me a lot of a Fire Quantum, not just in color, but how it revs up.

As for the Misfit Pearl being a "waste of money", sounds like the worst advice I've heard here in a while.

I've drilled hundreds of balls over the last 10 years and honestly the Misfit Pearl is the best dry lane ball I've ever owned.  It does need to be used on the proper condition.  People buy a dry lane piece and then complain that it's over-under.  I would never consider going to any tourney without my misfit pearl or my misfit.
