12 lb Bowling Balls
« on: August 04, 2012, 03:34:39 PM »
Today at my youth league, I was throwing my Nexxus and everything, and this 10 yr old kid comes up and says he has the same ball. He holds it up and I ask "How much does it weigh?" and he says "12". Come on. Why are people buying 12 lb $250 dollar bowling balls. Does it really even react differently to any other 12 lb ball. Does it even have a core in it? I didn't watch him as I was near the end of the center, but I was just curious, how do 12 lb Nexxus' react?

EDIT: Just as clarification, I throw 15 lb stuff, and am 14 yrs old about to be a freshman.

It has a core, but it's a generic modified core.
And to answer as to why people spend that much, just look around at things people blow their cash on. Some like to drop 1000 on four balls, and others like cars, cameras, and coke.
In the bag:

Roto Grip Wrecker
Storm IQ Tour Fusion
Track 400ASE
Faball Red Hammer

to answer your question . if u were 10 and could only throw 12 lbs wouldn't u wanna throw the same ball the cool older kids like u were throwing . u know how little kids are he thinks if he throws the same ball as u he can get the same results as u , as for the parents . i would never buy a kid a 200 dollar pancake core ball , but i might just be a cheep old fart lol

haha. Yeah man. I got my first reactive resin ball when I was 10, and it was some old Columbia ball. Cost my dad like 20 bucks. My dad would NEVER buy me that. The only way I could get one of those is if I payed for it myself, or won it in a giveaway. lol

Don't be fooled by the weight of the ball!!! I had a 12lb Wicked Siege that I drilled for a lady. She didn't like it and bought a Karma solid that she loves. She said I could give the 12lb Wicked to somebody and I told her that I was going to fix it for a guy that had open heart surgery. The doctor told him he could try bowling again, but to use a 12lb ball. I plugged the thumb and changed finger inserts. His span is similar to mine and thumb is just a bit bigger. He can into the center to see if he could bowl and I had the ball on the lane testing/playing around with it! The ball out hooked my Wicked at the break point by a ton!!! I had to move left and rolled 7 strikes in a row and he asked if I was practicing! I said no, that it was his ball! He said and it hooks that much. I had several guys want to roll the 12lb ball and they couldn't believe and much power it had. Oh, I left back to back 9 pins after the 7 strikes!  The 12 and 13lb balls use a similar core as the Vapor Zone with the same coverstock as the higher weight balls!! After this experiment is when I dropped down to 14lb and really like it a lot better. I did drill a 13lb ball for one of the guys after this and I shot 289 with it while we were experimenting with it!! Don't be afraid of the lighter weights!! Just my $.02, Bruce
