Transition ball choice
« on: May 10, 2006, 06:09:48 AM »
I need some help deciding this:

I currently have a Vapor Zone drilled 4 1/2" pin-PAP under ring, Mass Bias at 65 degrees, 2000 grit finish, deep weighthole 2 1/2" below PAP on VAL. It is very strong on the fresh, big midlane as expected. It is perfect until I get a little bit of burn in the heads and some carrydown in the backends, then I start pinging weak 10 pins for the rest of the day.

As of right now, I am usually going to a Smokin' Inferno drilled 5 3/4" pin-PAP through middle finger, no hole, at 2000 grit + light polish to get something to hit a little better, but it is many times too long until the lanes burn a little more.

I am wanting to put a ball between the Vapor and the Smokin'. I have narrowed it down to two choices:

1.) Vapor Zone drilled 5 1/4" pin-PAP above bridge, mass bias at 75 degrees, low x-hole and polish.

2.) Classic Zone Green Pin, polished with same drilling as my current Vapor Zone (4 1/2" pin-PAP, pin low, low x-hole)

Which do you guys think would be the better step? The Classic Zone would be about 25$ cheaper than the Vapor.

I have a Smoking drilled 5x 3 wieght whole on my pap 7/8ths dia, 2 1/4in deep giving me 7/8s total side wight and i have it sanded to 1500 grit, and its matching up perfectly for what im bowling Ths, im guessing about 39 feet long. I had it at box surface, and 2000 but it was going to long and leave alot of 10pins now its working very well. Im playing feet are centered over 22 look at 12 at the arrows to 8 on the break point, Im a low end tweener with about 16mph and 300 rpm

That didn't really answer my question at all....I already have a Smoking, and it goes to long on the condition that I'm looking for, but I want to keep that as an option for later transition.

I'm not exactly sure which ball would fit in better.  However, if you're considering cost, you can pick up a Violet ZC from ebay for dirt cheap.  I've gotten two NIB ZC Violets for a total of about $70 including shipping.  Also, I got the pin and top weight I requested.

Just a suggestion, if cost is a factor.

The Ambush would also be a good choice and will handle the carry down better than the Rampage. I'd put the Rampage below the Ambush on lanes that are transitioning. The pearlized low load particle coverstock of the Ambush will push through the carrydown while still clearing the heads smoothly. I do though know of many scratch bowlers in my area that use the Rampage AFTER the lanes have transitioned and carry down is not as much of a factor. Just my two cents

If your choices are strictly limited to either another VZ or the CZ I'd go with the CZ. It'll give you a similar, strong midlane read as the VZ but will clear the heads better once they start drying out. However, you're still gonna struggle with a squirty reaction when the CZ encounters the carrydown.

Recently I've been going to my Hammer Doom when I first begin to encounter carrydown. It's sharp breakpoint seems to ignore the transition and snaps out the 10. It's as smooth a ball as I've ever used through the heads and very strong in the backend. It goes long and then makes a beeline for the pocket. Couple the Doom with the Ambush and you've got a great one-two punch to combat transitioning lanes that are causing other equipment to either miss the breakpoint or burn up through the heads.
