Title: 3.5 performance... HELP!!
Post by: bshinn04 on December 22, 2010, 05:15:03 AM
Just got my 15lb 3.5 drilled and i wanted it to be as aggresive as possible so i put the pin below ring finger and cg kicked out a little over an inch.  No balance hole was needed.  Threw 4 games with it last night and got ZERO reaction out of it on out of box finish.  Took surface down to 1000 and it barely started moving.  Everything i've seen from this ball online shows it being a BIG hooking ball and everyone that throws it stands left and throws way right...  What is the problem?  i'm completely lost on why i'm getting virtually no movement even when i stand in the middle of the lane and throw down the 15 board...  my throw is 19-20 mph and around 425 revs.

COULD IT BE BURNING UP BEFORE IT GETS TO BREAK PT. SAND IT TO 2000 GRIT THEN PUT A LITTLE POLISH ON IT AND SWING IT 15 TO 5 AND SEE WHAT HAPPENS THEN LUK

I had same issue! Cover is very strong...
I had to redrill weaker and now ball is serviceable. It needs a ton of oil

It definatly requires oil.  I had one drilled pin up and while I had my personal best series with it out of the box, I wasn't able to use it so I sold it.

A pin down drilling on a super strong ball requires a ton of oil or it will burn up.  I agree that 2000 and some polish might help.

Thanks for the insight guys, I'll try the 2000 and polish before re-drilling.  As you could imagine i was extremely disappointed after the ball performed nothing like what i was expecting. I thought that it would complete my collection for now and be my big hooking ball for when the lanes were wet and it hooked much less than my 10 year old inferno, on a freshly laid THS with 60 units of oil, which is still my go-to ball when the lanes dry up.

you mentioned the cg location. that's irrelevant. where's the psa located from your pap? if you have this ball @ a 1000 & pin down in a stronger position, sounds like it's going to roll early smoothing out the backend. i'm assuming the psa is kicked out quite a bit also. that will promote smoother breakpoint as well.

i have to  agree with the above people
if u put pin under on that ball and left it oob
chances are its burning up early. only other thing i think u can do
is a surface change maybe 2000abralon and light polish and u should see some reaction if u dont wanna redrill

I've got the same problem with my 3.5, pin under ring finger and MB kicked out 2.5 inches. and tried every surface known to man and no consistent reaction. my ball speed is around 17 and if yours is 19 to 20 theres no way no matter what surface unless sanded to 360 is a ball with that speed gonna roll out or burn up. Of the few people i've seen throw them they have been lower speed bowlers. Brunswick can't even give me a good answer as what to do with it!!!!

When I had mine drilled originally, it didnt move at all! I tried polish at 4000 and it didnt read the lane at all...I was so confused!
I had the ball redrilled from 40x5x40 to a dual angle drilling of 60x4x35 and it is serviceable at 4000AB. It is not the ball I expected, but it has its place in my arsenal. I cant use it everyday, but when i can it carries a ton!
The cover is super aggressive for me and it needs a lot of oil. I am currently throwing a Track 715T (65x4.5x30 @2000AB)as my heavier/longer volume ball and it is much more versatile. It needs oil but doesnt roll out before it gets to the arrows. I keep the 3.5 in my car when i go shoot tournaments as a just in case ball.
The 3.5 is a good ball, but it is a sponge and very shot specific for me, when it can be used I score great with it.

I have not seen too many people be able to drill them aggresively and make them serviceable in my area.

Mine is drilled basically 4 1/2 X 4 1/2 with a hole an inch down from my PAP. Surface is the key. This ball was designed for medium to heavy oil. I've used mine dull, smooth sanded, and highly polished. Make sure the coverstock is matched up with the lane surface you are bowling on.

good to hear that i'm not the only one that is completely at a loss with this ball.  if you figure anything out let me know. i'll do the same for you.  i'm going to have a couple of guys that carry their PBA card look at it after my big wendesday night league and see what they say.  i'll keep you posted. thanks for the info.

i did notice that it carries a ton as well when i did manage to get lucky and find the pocket, which is why i really want to find a way to use this ball, but as of right now there just is no way i can confidentalbly throw it in my highly competitive league.  thanks for the info!

what kind of line are you throwing on a THS with this set-up?

I'm not a power player. I can get away with stronger balls and drilling patterns than many players. I've had the opportunity to use this ball on various oil patterns.....medium, medium-heavy, and heavy oil. Various length's in the pattern....35', 38', 40', 42', etc. I've used this ball dull on Brunswick ProLane, smoothsanded on older synthetics, and highly polished on wood lanes. I've used the ball playing all types of lines.....straight down 3 on the PBA Cheetah pattern. Swinging 12 to 5 in league, swinging 20 to 12 on the PBA shark pattern. Great ball but like any other ball on the market there is a time and a place for it.......

took it to 2000 and polished it and still no movement.  talked with my pro shop and we're actually going to go with a drilling layout that is very similar to a left handed set-up... putting the pin up above my middle finger and then moving the mass bias pin up under my bridge... Hoping that it works... he said he had drilled a Taboo like that and it was hooking more than any other set up he had tried, so keeping my fingers crossed.  I hate having to drill a ball more than once, but i had no use for it in my bag the way it was originally drilled...

You've got a low pin with a rolly layout from a rolly ball and added surface to it.  Plus 425 revs!  You shouldn't need anything with surface!  Probably need to bring it back up to 4000....or wait until you're on a pattern with enough head oil to allow the ball to store energy.  That thing is probably done hooking at your feet.  Most of todays balls are so strong now, you rarely have to take them down past 2000 abralon to get them to hook in the oil.  Especially when you have 425 revs!

On my 3.5, I went pin over the ring finger and have essentially left it at box finish.  Gets into a roll early and gives good pop on the backend.  But it needs oil and will work a fresh pattern down to nothing quick so I find I'm quickly migrating into my Wicked or 2.5.

340-370 revs
18 mph

200 book on PBA

I have 2 ea pin over and under. I tried to use on Sport shots both are boat anchors. I have tried 500 grit to 4000 no luck. A Friend asked me to polish his up. he said I want to look like a marble. So I sanded it 500,1000, 2000, 4000, then polish the daylights out of it. On a house shot he got great back end reaction. So I took My pin over and did the same. After a half of game it started to work great had the next 13 in a row .  Very little over reaction until 3rd game had to move left then week 10's and a few blow out 7 pins. I liked what I saw I will try it again this weekend and I will Polish up the pin under also . Lets see how this one works also.

Mine is drilled with the pin right above the bridge, with the mb about an inch to the right of the thumbhole.  I am pretty much a stroker/tweener, with probably average speed.  I have left it at box finish, but made sure to clean it after every set.  I have hit it with green scotch bright when I have seen it shine up a little, but very lightly.

For me, if I let it roll, it hooks great.  I have only used it on a THS, so hard to say how it would respond to more or longer oil.  Used it last two games last week and went 276, 248 for a 771, my second highest series ever!

I like this one after not using a Brunswick for many years.  I am curious if anyone thinks the pin above v. below is the determining factor here (I know it depends on a lot of other things, but what the heck).
