In search of a better understanding...
« on: November 20, 2006, 02:45:29 PM »
As much as I have bowled over the years, one would think I'd have a better understanding of my game and my ball setup.  Well, I don't really.  So I'm here to ask a few dumb questions...

Please refer to the photos for my benchmark ball.  A StrikeZone.  In the past few weeks, the house I practice at has a lot more oil in the heads.  The SZ simply won't move early enough, (the way I throw the ball anyway).  So I am thinking of plugging and redrilling it.

What would kind of reaction would I expect with the pin UNDER and/or OVER my fingers?  I realize the answers may be vague since I do not have a recent vid of me rolling but please (try) and give me your best guestimate.

If you want to know how I USED to roll the ball, refer to this old video...

My suggestion would be, before you re-drill it, try to modify the cover with some Scotch-Brite nylon pad, either the light grey (around 800 grit) or the green one (~ 600 grit). Take about 1/2 the shine off, by hand, not a spinner and see how the ball reacts. If hand scuffing doesn't work, then use the grey pad with a spinner to take off all the shine, but still as lightly as possible. Better not to pass the point where it works for you.

It is possible that you won't be happy with the results, but better trying a simple measure first than a total re-drill that you can always do.

Thanks.  I will try changing the surface first.  This is my fave ball and I really don't want to mess with a good thing.

CharlesT is correct: try to open up the surface more. The ball should read the lane earlier and hook more. Probably more arcing, but the extra traction should improve the ball finish in the pins.

Pin under ring would get the ball into roll earlier, but since you have quite a pin distance (3"+?), such a setup might move the CG towards the thumb and shift weight forward. A label drilling with the CG in the palm would also not be recommendable, because the MB would end up in the track and this could totally mess up ball reaction (negative flare for high tracker). Placing the MB at about 45-60° from your PAP could be an option, but would surely make a huge balance hole necessary, and I am not sure how low under the fingers you can set the pin. Probably under the bridge, and this would damoen the hook potential and create an arc.

Tough decision. Therefore, one more argument to stick with the drilling as it is and try surface adjustments first.
