Fair price on used Sidewinder
« on: May 26, 2008, 09:39:09 AM »
I have a friend out of state that will make me a package deal on a BVP Sidewinder and a Storm Attitude.  Both balls have very few games, although I will have to get both completely plugged and redrilled as he is a lefty.  I will also be responsible for shipping costs (about 1300 miles on UPS) so I am wondering what would be a fair price for each ball or for both together as a package? He wants me to set price, although I want to be fair. They are both 14lb single drills.  He has switched back to 15lb and doesn't need these now.

I would not pay over $50 total for both + shipping.Especially since he is left handed and you will have to do complete plugs. You can probably find equivalent balls locally that are right handed and would not have to be shipped. It is always better when you are able to use an existing hole or at worst,do a pitch plug.I used to sell high end balls plugged and drilled all the time for $60,and that included proper fitting and new inserts.

While I agree with Pooh on many things, on this I will disagree most strenuously. Every used ball SHOULD be plugged and redrilled entirely UNLESS your span AND pitches are VERY, VERY close to the guy's from whom you bought the ball. Not doing so, places your hand, tendons, ligaments and muscles in danger of doing potentially severe damage to them.

So whether he's lefty or righty, you should have every ball plugged and redrilled to FIT your hand. So it's $40, more or less for any ball you buy.

Offering a guy $25 for a ball with very few games can be very insulting. Yes, of course, you must take into account the cost of shipping. But single drill, little use balls should go fo approx 40 - 50% of internet retail delivered price. For instance, Buddies, a very good internet dealer, charges $105, Delivered, for a new Sidewinder. A single drill, little used Sidewinder, should be around  $45 - 55 delivered. An Attitude Shift goes for $146 delivered. Offering a guy $25 for a single drill, little used one IS an insult, unless he's absolutely desperate. If it were me, I wouldn't care what you thought you had to do to it. The price would be in the area of $70 delivered.

Thanks, Charlest!  That is what I was looking for.  This guy has been a good friend to me and treats me right, the last thing I would do is insult him.  I don't want to pay a premium but I want to be fair to him. He sold me a well used Strike Zone that was in very good shape and these balls have few games on them.  The right handed balls I have bought used we plugged the thumb and redrilled it for a thumb mold to match my span and thumb pitch and re-did the finger grips. So, I hear what you're saying, $40 for a drill plus grips.  The main thing is to save a few bucks and it helps us both out.  Plus, even though we are a ways apart he has seen me bowl and is pretty good at telling me what a certain ball/layout will do for me.

Thanks,

Mark

At our shop the Attitude new retails at about $219 drilled, while the Sidewinder new is $150 drilled.

Like charlest said, you don't want to insult a friend, BUT you'll incur at least $80 to plug and re-drill them both combined. I haven't any idea on shipping, but maybe another $30 there... so offer him around $100-$110 and you'll probably feel okay.

As a comparison, our shop sells a used ball fairly cheap, but we'd sell the Attitude drilled for $80, and the Sidewinder around $60 drilled. Each would be resurfaced before leaving the shop if needed, too. Most of our customers would not incur shipping costs, so that's the unknown. These prices assume they are both only slightly used. Some of our used equipment is priced at our drilling cost, literally, just to keep them from piling up. Hope this helps.
