Comparible to Black/Green Avalanche
« on: April 28, 2013, 01:05:18 PM »
Just wondering what would be a comparible ball to the Black/Green Avalanche but could handle more oil? I love this ball and it has the perfect reaction for me. I stand at 17 and throw 5-7 so I guess pretty up and in. If I hit my mark it just hooks perfectly into the pocket for me everytime. I also have a DV8 Reckless and have tried every change possible on the cover and I cant get a consistant reaction, just doesnt work for me at all. I dont care what manufacture just looking at balls that might me similar to the Avilanche im using now, thanks.

The Reckless is the touch stronger than the GB Avalanche that you wanted but it has a hair more backend. If you tried every surface,t hen it was probably not drilled for what you say you want. (I phrased that carefully, as what you say you want may not be what you need.)

I found the GB Avalanche to be very smooth reacting and handled light to medium-light oil.

So am I correct in assuming you want the same overall smoothness but you want it to handle medium-light to true medium oil???

If so, would you say you were speed dominant, rev dominant or matched?
What's your PAP and how was the Avalanche drilled?

Charlest, as you might remember from my other post you replied to I'm a beginner, so your right in that I may not know what I wanted with the Reckless. With the Avalanche it was already drilled I just had the thumb moved to fit my span. I tried the reckless again last night this time at 1000 grit and in two games bowled 148, 142 and could not keep it from going through the break even when i slowed down a bit. Next 4 games with Avalanche were all over 170, 206 being the highest. I'm speed dominant and yes I'm looking for a ball to use in med-heavy conditions when my avalanche won't work. Like you said it could just me the way the Reckless is drilled? I don't know my PAP but here's a pic of both balls if that helps.

Is that 1000 grit dull or sanded? (i.e. not polished)
That will hook a lot and very early!!

I'd be inclined to suggest a milder (read" finer, higher numeric) grit level, maybe at least 2000 grit, if not 4000 grit. 1000 grit on a Reckless could hook very early with out a good deal of oil in the midlane and the heads, especially playing the outside line you like, even if you are speed dominant. Try a light dose of polish over the 1000 grit first; then try 3000 or 4000 grit - no polish. See what the differences are for you. Surfaces are easy, safe changes. Re-Drillings are more drastic.

While the Avalanche design is smooth, so the drilling doesn't make a great deal of difference, the drilling on the Reckless will make it hook more with more backend, so I'm not really surprised that it is too much ball. Just a guess on my part, but to make it milder, a possibly more appropriate drilling light have had the pin under the center of the bridge and used a light polish over that 1000 grit sanding. (But this drilling is just a guess.)

That Reckless (with that drilling) will always be more "ball" than that Avalanche, but a milder drilling (something like I suggested above) could help it the Reckless be more controllable.

FYI it doesn't take being a rookie or a newbie to NOT be sure if what we want is what we need. Often this "want' tints our thinking in many things, not just bowling. So it's no shame; we all do it, whether we ant to admit it or not.

Yeah I really relied on the pro to watch me and drill the Reckless the way he thought it would work for me. Im trying to not just learn how to bowl but understand how everything works so im educated on the whole game and being a beginner I obviously have alot to learn.

I sanded the Reckless with 500 then 1000 Siaair pads, no polish. I used a ball spinner I made out of a drill press. I found another thread you had posted in talking about the Avalanche finish so I took the advice you gave to that person and did 2000 then polish on it.

Not sure if I explained correctly but, the Reckless is actually not hooking or hooking really late for me. Even at 1000 I seem to throw it through the break from every angle I try, it just spins down the lane though the pins without ever hooking. My wife hates when I throw it because the Avalanche just works and looks so nice when I throw it, with the Reckless I just struggle most the time.

The 1000 finish is, I believe, actually using up all its energy in the heads and the midlane. It has nothing left by the times it reaches the breakpoint, no less the pocket.

If you can use the Avalanche at all, you might have to play the 5th arrow to use the Reckless at 1000 grit.n It has a much strong coverstock than the Avalanche.

That's why I suggested a dose of polish on the Reckless IF you are encountering more oil than the Avalanche can handle.

Ok I understand now what your saying and thank you for being patient with me. I'll take the Reckless to 2000 and factory polish tonight and see how it works tomarrow night before leauge. Oh and yes the with the conditions we bowl on in leauge (medium oil) the Avilanche doesnt work as good the first game or two but is great the last half of the night. Thanks again for all the help.

Try a light dose of polish, hand application and hand buffing.

With the polish, the Reckless will be more flippy (have more backend) than the Avalanche, so start deeper, then move back outside until you get a good look with the overall reaction.

(FYI The stock surface is 500 grit, then Rough Buff compound; so that is more of a matte finish than 2000 + polish.  If the polish's reaction is too strong or too uncontrollable, you can try all Abralon: 1000 grit, then 2000 grit, then 3000 or 4000 grit.)

Hey Charlest, just a quick update. After taking the Reckless to 2000 + Polish it worked fantastic last night! I averaged 169 (20 pins higher than my average) in leauge last night with it and didnt throw my Avalanche once. It was the first time i've had to move that far left, if my release was good the ball reacted the same everytime. Thanks a ton for the help. Now I can keep the Reckless and look at getting a heavy oil ball at some point when im ready.
