Brunswick ball for light oil/dry lanes
« on: July 20, 2007, 06:27:09 PM »
Just wondering what would go well under my Total and Red Zone.  Total is pretty good for heavier stuff, Red Zone for medium stuff, and looking for a ball to go under Red Zone.  Do those Power Groove balls work well, or are they mainly for "beginners?"  Or is it better to just make surface adjustments to more reactive balls?  Thanks for all responces!

I'm on the same boat as you, well maybe not... but I was told to wait for the avalanche. or if you're in need of a ball now, the BVP rampage.

the power groove or power groove dry/r would be a better choice than the rampage on the condition that you mentioned.

The Power Groove still hooks a ton.  I'd say the Dry/R looks like the best true dry lane ball I've seen in a while.

The Power Grooves are great on dry.  They carry better than you'd expect from a 3 piece ball.

i have one groove drilled to skid/snap. got it when they first came out.just bought a new one to go with my total. i punched it up to skid/arc(as close to as possible anyway). 6th game i threw with the new was a 300. for the price- i personally don't think you can get better bang for the buck than a power groove. total price paid for that groove=$65.

I would wait for the avalanch pearl, that will be a great ball all the way around.. Its proven technology and personally I can't wait to get both a pearl and a solid, pearl with a long and strong reaction and the solid set up for a SMOOOTH reaction with kick in the back. MMMM great old technology.

Here's the things about the power groove.

They have a very high rg core...it revs up late.
It seems to often hook a long time after the end of the pattern.

Depending on the condition they can hook a ton(shorter pattern or lots of friction found) on the back or not much(longer patterns where there is no dry till the end.

I have an early one called a Dynamic groove.  I've shot lots of high scores with it on a house that had synthetics for 30 feet an wood backs for 30 feet!
Big snappy backend.

There were days I would walk in and it would hook as much as my Demolition zone(yes....BIG!).

OTher days if not much friction found...snappy but often too late.

Another house I bowl on is quite dry outside 7.  I can play up 5 6 7 area and just own the pocket.  Often it is my best ball for hit on these conditions when I play out in that dry area.  Ball is a 3 inch pin out with pin above and to side of ring and cg back towards grip center!

I have seen others move the pin down below the pap to finger line and be able to get good results on longer less friction patterns.  BUT it is never an oil ball.  AND it is VERY sensitive to oil ending up with dramatic differences in hook between it and other lower rg cores, sometimes similar....sometimes a LOT less!

These are what I call hit and miss balls.  You'll know VERY soon if they are going to work that day...on that pattern!

The power groove can deliver great performance. I shot 300 with solid reactive one (no longer made), and with black particle which isn't the greatest of balls. I've seen the Dry R hook a ton by more then one bowler.

I've got a Plum Pearl NIB in 15lb if your interested PM me.
