The witch with the wort on her nose... j/k

A particle can work on lighter conditions, but it should be light-load ball and you need to sand it to a higher grit and/or polish it.

A particle ball grabs the lane earlier and is better suited for more oil. A weak Pearl Reactive will be better for Lighter conditions. Hope this helps!

Depends on your hand and speed, but for the most part, you don't usually use particles on lighter volumes of oil.  Part of that is self-perpetuating: most particle balls are made for more oil than less, so light-oil particles are few and far between.

They can be useful, though, for light, long patterns or patterns that start life as pretty solid mediums but end up broken down with carrydown.  Particle pearls work well in that case as the pearl helps get through the heads while the particles help chew through the carrydown.

Surface is very important, you won't be using an OOB AMB Particle on light oil (probably not with any surface, really).  But high grit sanded or polished, coupled with the particles, can help smooth the backends if they're over-under or spotty.

Look at the Venus from Rotogrip.  Light load particle pearl with a highly polished finish.  Higher RG and lower diff to save energy for the backend and not roll too soon.  The old purple Power Groove Proactive was a polished particle pearl that would handle medium-light to light oil.

Particles were great when there was more volume on the lanes and a smooth backend was required.

They work as above today with lighter load particles than the past by starting up a little earlier than reactives  giving move midlane and a little bit less or should one say a more controllable backend than reactives.

In our area the solids work well in our area when covered with a ton of polish or even wax on our low volume application shots by smoothing out the tremendous wet dry effect we have in our area!

The new Sidewinder is a nice one. More versatile than most particle balls. I've been throwing mine for about two weeks and have tried it shiny (factory) and at 2000 abralon because I was using it on the Scorpion pattern.  Great value for the price.

As stated earlier.. All depends on factors like your revrate and speed and so on.. And also what type of pattern your gonna bowl on..

Nothing wrong with using particle on hooking conditions..

On shorter patterns i prefer particle balls..
I've used a Fuze Eliminator at 4000 Abralon for some short, light to heavy volume patterns..

Even dull pearl or solid reactives can do the trick..

All depends on the reaction you're looking for on that particular pattern..

It all depends on the ball and your ball speed/rev rate ratio!!
