Mammoth at 4000 abralon
« on: December 18, 2007, 09:58:24 PM »
I've been having trouble battling carrydown. My Fury Pearl and Smoking weren't getting a very consistent look into the pocket. So remembering something I read on here someplace about polishing a Mammoth I decided to plug and redrill my Mammoth(do my own stuff). Put the pin to pap at 5" just above the ring finger, cg at 3 1/2". Worked my way up to 4000 abralon on the spinner. At 4000 it has somewhat of a shine. I stood on 20 throwing straight down 10, ball starts arcing at 40 to 45 feet, ten in the pit. At the end of the third game I had only moved my feet 1 board left using the same mark I started with. Never missed the pocket all night and except for missing 3 makable spares could have had a 7. This has really opened my eyes about thinking outside the box when when looking for an answer to the lane conditions. I still can't believe how consistent the ball was. I'm hoping the ball will do the same tonight.

That's where I liked mine best, between 2000 & 4000 depending on what the pattern looked like.  Every heavy load particle ball has potential just because the ball won't be too strong off the breakpoint.  The only issue seems to be whether or not you can carry.

This type of ball should be more valuable on "ugly" shots, but there's always the chance they can be very good on house shots as long as the bowler can find the right combination of ball speed, revs., cover prep., etc.

Glad to hear of your success. I may have to bring mine out of the locker more often.

P.S. Don't be afraid to try the Fury Pearl at 1000 and 2000 abralon if carry-down is a regular thing.  This ball is very versatile.

I don't have a Mammoth but I do have a Yeah Baby, which is also a very strong, high-load particle ball.  Dull it's too much ball even for my rev-challenged self, but with a light coat of polish, kinda like what you've got at 4K Abralon, it's awesome.  Rolls through anything, it's strong enough to go through the carrydown or go around it.

Similar experience with my old Eliminator. It is at 4.000 grit Abralon, drilled strong for early roll, and it bites through any spotty lane I could imagine. Carbide type particle coverstocks and a glossy surface are just a good combo on tough shots

It's interesting that you don't hear too much about anyone shining up a heavy load particle. Could be a weapon that alot more people could use but they shy away from it because of the OOB finish and the heavy particle load. The shot I used the Mammoth on was the house shot but it held the line great as long as I did my part. I may have to pick up some particle balls off EBay and do some experimenting.

Like most others, I got kinda leery of particle balls in general for a while.  Seemed like they just burned up too easily, they never seemed to have any recovery when I had to move in and swing it even a little bit.  I could play straight up 5-10, but every board the thing went to the right felt like five boards it had to come back.

Then I got my Yeah Baby and I love it.  I did polish it up some to keep it from checking up too early as the night wore on but man, it's awesome.  No longer am I afraid of particles.

Used the Mammoth for the first game in league last night, 237. I was 5 boards farther left, 25 board, with my feet then the night before at a different house. Breakpoint was 8 to 10 board. Ball really worked well, but like usual at this house, the lanes turned into a desert and had to put it away. I'm really glad I tried this combo out. The Mammoth was just sitting around gathering dust because I thought I didn't have a use for it. I think it will be the first ball out of the bag now.

Well, just got back from my Thursday "old guys bowling" league. Took the Mammoth out of the bag and used it for all three games. Shot 680 with a high of 245. Only moved my mark and feet two boards for the three games. I'm like a little kid who just got a new bb gun. I just can't believe how consistent this ball is. I haven't had one ball go brooklyn yet, and the ones I send a little wide always make it back to the pocket. I think I'm gonna have to order another one just for a backup. Now all I have to do is find a ball for the Wednesday league that turns into a desert after the first game.

I love the Mammoth. I spoke with BrunsBob about surface prep and he said to feel free to change the surface. Sanding will not hurt the performance. So I took it up to 2000 abralon and hit it with some polish. I love this ball! I would like to try another at 4000 abralon.

Thans again to notclay for the tip. It made the ball my favorite particle.
