drill pattern for impulse....old guy
« on: February 01, 2005, 02:36:08 AM »
I posted this request last week but inadvertently erased while looking for replys.  I am 71 yr old bowler, bowling with an artificial left hip so my ball speed is about 13 (pro's 18) I have purchased a impulse with about 3.6 top weight and 3.5" pin.  I have several quantums and usually drill them pin over bridge or stacked pin over ring finger but going to a league with heavier oil and my Q's don't quie make it (getting old) ihave 3 298 games after age 60 so still turn it pretty good but concerned about lower ball speed and do not want to play too deep an angle (ball wt is 12 lbs) I would appreciate some advise on drill patterns (dry lane pattern looks pretty good)  Thanks....RRC

Without seeing you throw a couple balls, its tough to make a suggestion, but from you said.... I'll try to make an educated guess.  Even though you are bowling on heavier oil conditions, the increase in strength of ball cover/core (the new impulse zone compared to from older quantums) should match up to oilier conditions for you better.  I would say pick a pin position you are most comfortable with...  You said that you had some equipment with the pin over the ring finger that worked well...  I would go with that.  Since you do want this ball for heavier oil, I would probably suggest putting the psa in the strong (just right of your thumb) or in the arc (further right of your thumb) positions.  both of these positions are likely to require a weight hole.  Take the ball out and give it a shot.  If it Isn't strong enough for you, try a scotch brite on the surface to give it a little more bite.  On the other hand if it is too strong, then have your proshop put a little shine on the surface.

good luck,

I am a Stroker/Tweener and I have an Impulse Zone with a 2 3/4" Pin and love it. I also have low revs. The ball is terrific. It is currently the first ball out of my bag. Mine is drilled Pin under ring finger with the PSA at approx. 70 degrees. This putting the Pin under RF helps the ball rev sooner in the mid lane and with my low revs, that is what I need help on. Your going to heavier oil, putting the Pin above fingers may not work as this delays the ball reving up and on heavier oil it might skid too far before reving. You might want to try putting the Pin under RF with PSA at 70 degrees like I did or put Pin beside RF and PSA kicked to the right a bit if you are a RH bowler.

yeah definitely agreed... it you have a lower amount of revs, try a pin under the fingers... ...  but I seem to remember the original post saying slow speed and a good amount of revs!?!?!  if this is the case, I would keep the pin above.
