I recently purchased the original inferno
looking for a stronger ball to fit in
my present arsenal.
I drilled it 5x5 and left the ball in box
condition. Unfortunately, I've only been
able to use it on fresh league conditions.
I'm confused because my Smash R and Attitude 1
(same drilling and similar, well maintained
surfaces) are reacting MUCH stronger overall.
How does the Inferno respond to surface
changes?
I also notice that my Inferno surface
is a red/black pearly color around the label
and a grey swirly pattern on the bottom.
Is this normal?

Very well. A scuffed Inferno will still be clean in front but will have a stronger midlane and back end reaction.

Both your Smash/r & attitude 1 are much weaker balls.

If you're getting more reaction from them than your inferno, there's a good chance that you're trying to use the inferno on to dry of a lane & it's rolling out.

In addition to all the other good comments, a 5x5 drilling will make any strong pearl, like the Inferno, even more flippy and hard to control. Most people have found a 105 degree drilling (mostly called label leverage; roughly a 3.5-4" x 5-6") to be very useful on the Inferno.
