Has anyone drilled their The New Standard label?
« on: January 11, 2005, 09:41:38 PM »
Just curious if anyone has one drilled-up over the label (cg at or near center of the grip with the pin to the right of their ring finger)...

I have a team member who has a N-Standard drilled that way (label-box surface) and it rolls great for him.  It still covers plenty of boards even with that drilling.  Awesome rolling ball.  He also has a Real Deal that he loves. It's more versatile than his N-Standard on mediums so it gets more use.  I have one (NS) drilled pin over ring cg slightly right, but I haven't been able to test it yet.  Perhaps I can tonight, if there is enough oil for it.

I'm just curious if I should go with a label drilling or stacked.

Sir,
our team captain has his drilled label and we bowl on a fresh medium-heavy THS and he's crossing 20 out to 7 with his AND..it's highly polished..

Depends on the condition you see most and your hand

See me throwing the new standard here.  Drilled 4-1/2 x 4-1/2 with box surface on weight hole on axis on a med shot.  The drier the lanes the less it hooks becuase it just rollllllss.  I was not real loose and dealing with old arthritis issues in the left knee, but the ball shines on med-heavy oil.  My go to for sure.

Jeff, I do not have a lot of revs and I tend to throw the ball fast.  I want to use it on our THS.

Nod, thanks for the vids.  However, the ball seems to skid a fair amount before it begins to grab (kind of hard to see because you get in the way).

What do you all think of say this layout:

I am thinking a modified label leverage with a ton of thumb weight to help induce earlier roll...any thoughts?

Sir...if you tend to throw the ball fast...I'd go with more of a 10:30 drill, not 1:30

Jeff please enlighten me on those time drillings people talk about all of the time.  1:30 2:30 3:00 etc...I don't know what they mean.

I agree... speed got my ball down the lane, not skid.  Speed is about 18-19.  Also u are choosing a drill that is more arc than strong.  If you do not have a lot or at least moderate hand you will just throw it down the lane.  10:30 drilling may allow it to get into a roll to finish and carry.

I'd be very fearful of a lot of thumb weight with this ball. Box condition, around 800 grit, is VERY strong. I have a label drilling and can ONLY ise it on Brunswick Anvil lanes, so far. I polished it with Legends own polish (it needs very little ot add considerable length, from what I have seen). I tried it on a medium condition and it rolled far to early, even though the pocket remained wider than average, as seems normal with Legends balls.

SO I took mine back down to 800 grit with a grey nylon pad and there I will leave it. The ball has a strong backend; BTM rated the torque (their measure of flipability, if you will), as a 7.0, out of 10, even with the 800 grit stock cover; this is their highest rating. So, it's backend can be sharp.

On a THS, even 41 feet of oil, can be problematic, unless many bowlers use particle balls. ANvil lanes doesn't need a lot of oil to make it look very slick.

Instead, you might consider placing the virtual mass bias just to the left of the thumb hole, if you're a righty, not all the way out onto the track, as  most label drillings have.

What balls and drilling are you using now on this house shot?

char, I am using a Fire Quantum drilled label with finger weight.  It is atomic on the backend.  Almost too uncontrollable.  I also have a Vendetta Particle Solid drilled label with no finger and no thumb (even).  That ball was very versatile and rolls pretty strong.  However, it has hundreds of games on it and it's time for something new.  It was never really that great when our house staff decided to not strip the backends (but what ball would be).  That is why I want to give The New Standard a try.  Is it possible that I have more hand (revs) than I think I do?

Sir,
10:30 would be having the cg opposite of the label drill...kick the cg out to the right...like this...

O.O..p

Sir Bowl-A-Lot,

The New Standard is a great, strong ball; it is not the heaviest oiler, but it may be the hardest hitting.

Yes, you may have more hand than you think, but who really knows, without seeing you. Compare your revs and speed to other good local bowlers, by someone with a decent eye.

I know you'd like to go to stacked leverage, and it wouldn't be the worst thing in a world if you decided the drilling you finally picked wasn't the best one, as long as you have a decent pro shop. I picked label leverage because the ball was so new and there were no reports on it. Mine is strong enough for anything I've ever seen, but then I don't see a lot of oil, although I know where to find some. I just drilled up a Yeah Baby! and an Absolute Power and will be doing some comparisons with my New Standard (same drilling) and will publicize the results here, somewhere.

As I suggested, try the modified label with a little side weight. That will place the virtual mass bias just to the left of you thumb. My standard label leverage (actually 4x5) placed the MB closer to my track. What this will do is place the core angle closer to stacked leverage and with the remaining side weight, it will allow you to punch a weight hole in it that will increase flare if the ball does not hook enough. How's that for a compromise?

Sounds good charlest.  I will go with that.  I have always seemed to have more success with a label drilling anyways.  Maybe because I can control the ball better.  Or maybe it is because I prefer a strong arc vs. a violent backend reaction.  Either way, I think a label lev. with maybe 1/2 oz of side weight will fit the bill.

Thanks to all.
