My first Big B Ball
« on: April 12, 2010, 11:38:32 AM »
And it's an oldie:  The Zone Classic.  It's purple, and mellow.  But, I haven't really thrown it very much, because it just went straight on a fresh THS.

What should I expect with this ball once I do try to give it a go?  I'm righty, I have ~250 RPMs, throw around 15.5-16.5 MPH.  The ball is drilled 4 inches pin to PAP, with a two inch pin buffer.  The MB is also 4 inches to PAP.

What should I expect from this purple ball?  I love how purple it is, lol.

First question - is the pin green or red?

The green pin was the "normal" release.  Good length with plenty of pop on the back.  Very popular ball.  The red pin was the later "oops" release.  It cured too fast making the cover much harder and less porous.  Nothing wrong with it per se, but it wasn't what Brunswick intended, so they removed the green pin, installed a red one, and sold it with a reduced price.  Good dry lane ball, could be a very good ball for someone rev dominant.

I'm not sure what color it has, lol.  The pin on my ball is black:

The circle around it is indeed green though.  Perhaps it is one of the "green pin" balls.

This ball isn't THAT old, I find it hard to believe than an asymmetrical Activator Pearl ball drilled 4" pin to pap with a strong MB doesn't hook on THS. I would suggest sanding it to the lowest grit possible, running it through a rejuvinator or something similar, bringing it back to box (400 + high gloss), and try again because something's not right.

To be fair, my Gravity Shift didn't hook much more overall - maybe 3 or 4 boards.  But, the Gravity read the lane a good bunch earlier and continued well through the pocket.  This ball read the pattern late and just sort of didn't do too much.  I think this zone will be a wonderful step down from my Gravity Shift when I want a similar reaction shape and the Gravity is being overly aggressive.

And actually, the Zone was NIB.  My pro-shop guy was basically like, "Nobody throws 16 but you.  Nobody wants to buy these, and they've been here for years.  Take it."  So it's a toy and a bit of an experiment.  I'll definitely have more to report tomorrow night after my second shift league.

How many games do you have on the ball?

That's not an oldie at all, it should be a bit stronger than a current Rattler, if in good shape. Activator is very durable, but making an oil extraction and touching up the surface is never wrong.

Besides, with the 4" pin to PAP and MB at 4", coupled with the low RG of this ball, I'd suspect it to hook and roll pretty early, showing "only" a mild banana hook. I think you should be able to move deep with it and send it across the lane, because of this, and it should be effective on longer, light to medium volume oil with this setup.
If you want more flip, put the MB further away from the PAP.

I''d give it the squeaky clean treatment with the optional face lift...meaning de-oil, resurface, etc.
