what would you do
« on: February 22, 2009, 01:24:04 AM »
Through the years I have tried a couple different balls from Storm, Ebonite and Lane #1. But I always seem to go back to Lane #1's Golden Nugget. Just seems to fit my game as a very good benchmark ball. But all good things must come to an end. Nugget has a Powercoil 18 cover around a diamond core. So would you try to match the coverstock(Copperhead, Swarm), or the core. I realize lane #1 has changed cores somewhat, but the basic cores are still the same in many of their balls. Also liked the Lane #1 XL(Powercoil 17 I think). I am a 16 to 17mph, medium rev, 45 deg axis rotation bowler. And please do not use this thread to bash Lane #1. That is done in enough other places. Thanks for reading

smer,

In my opinion the coverstock, and any adjustments made to it, affect ball reaction more than the core will since that is the part of the ball in contact with the lane surface.

The core can enhance what the bowler puts on the ball, and can compliment a good cover, but the bowler's style (revs, speed, tilt, etc.) and the cover will have a bigger influence.

Every company has made some great equipment over the years, especially when it matches up well with the bowler's game and conditions. There are certain balls that are literally "duds" for me, but may prove valuable for the next guy.

So, if you've had success with a certain coverstock, and even certain layouts, it's hard to argue with that. Roll with it!!

I thought your info might not be correct on the gold nugget, so i went to lane1 and checked. Their info on the gold nugget says that it was p17 carbide particle. It also had a single, raised nugget inside the diamond core.

As for the XL, it only said "extra length" reactive.

If this is indeed the case, you are going to have trouble matching the coverstock on the gold nugget, i don't think you will find pk17 on much of anything now except for a Brunswick Powergroove, and they don't make those with particles anymore.  Probably wouldn't have been a match anyhow, as the powergrooves had very high rg cores with offset flip pucks.

Pretty sure the Nugget has the same cover that the Riot Zone did, which was particle pearl.

I would pick up a copperhead,I was a fool for selling mine.I used to throw some saws back in the day and the copper reminded me of the old saws.

I forgot that the nugget had particals in the coverstock. My bad. New question. In my area, most houses put ot a THS for league and tournaments. Could a guy go with a Copperhead for higher volumes of oil, Swarm or Rattler(or both with different drillings) to cover med-heavy to med-light and something from the Avalance series(pearl or slide) for dry. Do not know much about Brunswick equipment, not real popular in the area.
