Rampage or Smokin?
« on: October 10, 2005, 01:52:05 AM »
Here is my arsenal:

Total Shock & Awe
Rule GP2
Real Deal
Blade Reactive
Absolute Inferno
Blade Pearl
Blazing Inferno
Lane 1 Bullet
Target Zone

I really haven't thrown the Blade Pearl at all, and I'm getting a bit frustrated with the over/under that I've been getting out of my Absoulte on our extremely wet/dry house shot. I'm thinking about drilling up either a Rampage or a Smokin'. Do you guys/gals have any thoughts on which one would be the better choice? In case you need to know, I am a high speed (18-19 mph) player with slightly above average revs and a very high track.

The Absolute is, by nature, smooth and continuous. Unless you have sever O/U, too much or not enough oil, the AI should work. Mine is super smooth but strong and really helps figure out the lane conditions. Both balls you suggested are strong in the backend and that would only worsen your case of O/U.

P.S. I think your gonna have to buy a heavy oil ball, I dont think you have enough

Well, King, the AI that I have is polished up a bit, so that has something to do with it. I loved the look it gave me at this house last year, but the lanes are even more erratic this year, and I'm having a really hard time reading the ball from one shot to the next. That's why I was hoping something like the smokin' or rampage, if drilled for a hard arc, would help me out. As for the heavy oil stuff, yeah, I know it looks that way, but with my high speed the balls really don't overlap at all. I listed them in order of strength from flood ball to toast. I actually get good use out of all of them.

I think that you may be able to use the AI still with some surface prep modifications.  My specs are similiar to yours (maybe a little more ball speed).  I find that I need a smooth surface for O/U type conditions.  By smooth I mean like 1000-2000 sanded or compound not polish.  Too much polish for me and the ball is very unpredictable.  I would try sanding to say 1000 and then applying rough buff, just not too much shine.  The reason I say a 1000 is to get more length than the box 400grit and to have finer grit before the rough buff is applied.  This should allow you start the ball in the oil line and then find the breakpoint that is more consistant down the lane (smooth out the O/U down the lane).  This can be an easy fix rather than buying a new ball.

I have an ai and an si both drilled similar and the si is harder to control for me and is a little more condition specific.

Boy, you guys really know how to rain on the parade of a guy who is looking to buy a new ball! lol. Seriously, though, you're all probably right. I know that the AI has a great deal of usefulness, I just need to figure out how to get a more consistent look out of it. I'm guessing that I'll just have my shop guy order a bottle of rough buff for me. In any case, thanks for the input.
