I got my heavy oil ball...
« on: October 08, 2003, 08:42:12 AM »
I finally broke down and picked up a #15 Swamp Monster today from my local proshop. I had initially thought I wanted a Raging Inferno, but the price eliminated that.  I had then kind of decided on an Ebonite V2 strong, but the Swamp Monsters $40 cheaper retail price won out in the end. (I'm sure the V2 would have fit my needs just fine as well though). I fooled around with it the first game to try to get a feel for it and then settled down and threw a 219 the next game. This was on freshly oiled lanes -- the ball would come back very wet! I still had to play a deep shot as I was standing practically against the ball return on my left. I was throwing over 20 at the arrows out to 8 or 9 at the breakpoint. I had to keep the speed up or it would try to go brooklyn on me.  I'm guessing I won't run into too much oil for this ball very often.  Right now, I'm cleaning it up and giving it a good coat of Doc's Elixir. That'll probably move the breakpoint out a couple feet which will be ok with me.  I'll have to wait and see if the opportunity arises to use it in tomorrow nights league. I think my arsenal is complete now at 5.

Bigfoot - Good to hear yo found a ball that will fit your arsenal.  The Elixir should help with reducing the amount of oil you pick up on the ball as well as reduce the amount of carry down since the balls coverstock will shed the oil.  Like you stated you will get a little more length and if you note the ball wants to squirt or becomes over/under on the lane you may want to take the coverstock down a notch and that should even thing out without losing the backend reaction.

Good luck

charlest - I don't have the exact numbers but it looks like pattern 1E with both the pin and cg just to the right of and parallel to the grip. (I'm still trying to get a handle on all the numbers such as when someone says it's drilled 4x4 or something I'll know (and be alble to remember) what that means).

Doc - I didn't get to use the ball during league -- I pretty much stuck with the SmashR tonight. However one of my teammates and I threw it about 15 time between the 2 of us after league.  I think maybe I need to give it another dose of the Elixir as when I cleaned it (Ebonite Powerhouse Energizer) it was still pretty dirty.  Both my SmashR and Vortex have been given a couple or three Elixir treatments over the last year and both pretty much wipe clean with a towel.  I still clean them with the Energizer, but my paper towel barely gets dirty. Given the difference in coverstocks, I may never have it that easy with the Swamp Monster, but we'll see.
