I got my Raven Quantum... (Bad News)
« on: November 09, 2005, 05:10:32 AM »
it has a 3" pin and 4.7 ounces of top weight.
HA!
im seeing if i can get an exchange on it from bowlingball.com
anything you could do with 4.7 ounces of top weight?
i'd imagine the x-hole would be the size of a softball.

Besides drilling the holes very deep?
And is it true when you have a lot of top weight, the ball goes longer?

personally, i think if the top weight is too high, it actually wobbles on the lane. i havent confirmed this, but would make sense...

A top weight of 4.7oz wouldn't make a ball visually wobble.  Depending on where you put the CG, drilling the finger holes deep would help.  Keep in mind, you can have up to 3oz of static weight in any direction, so your goal is really just to try to eliminate that extra 1.7 ounces.  A good CG location, deepened holes and a weighthole should do the trick.  But don't fret, if your pro shop guy is good he'll be able to find a solution.

3oz top/bottom, 1oz side to side, 1oz finger/thumb

I could handle 4.7 top no problem.

is there any difference in reaction?

Pin below ring, cg shifted 1" from grip center (should give you about 1oz of side)... with an x hole 5" right of grip center to bring it back to 0.

You'll love the reaction.

I drilled an Ultimate with 4.5 tw. There are limitations to how you can drill it, but no difference in how the ball rolls in the end.

I love high top weights espeically in agressive shell balls. It gives me a bit of added length without having to over pin or adjust the shell.  4.7oz. is not a big deal especially with a 5in. span (I assume you have decent finger sizes and use a slug or insert 1 1/4 in hole).  I agree with Nick pin below fingers 4-5in and kick the Cg 1 maybe 1.5in. (check side weight before drilling).  Put a hole on your axis back to 1/4+ to 0.  A stack drilling (off the label)is likely going to cause too much side weight as the Cg will likely be 2" or so off your center line.  Thus you may need 1 1/4 hole 3in. deep.

i have a vicious attack that started with 4.5 top weight and a 4"pin...just went pin at the lower right corner of the ring finger and stacked the cg with a pretty good sized w.hole...rolls nice for me.
