I Switched from 15lbs. to 14lbs....
« on: April 27, 2006, 04:52:24 PM »
ANYONE ELSE TRY THIS? RESULTS?

I used 15lbs... I was a cranker with good speed.
About 6 months ago I shortened my drill span, changed my thumb pitch, moved up a foot closer on the approach, reduced my speed a little and stopped cranking it really hard.

I became a refined cranker with more control, with less speed, but still a decent amount of hand.  I noticed a left a good deal of 9 pins and had trouble getting my ball to my break point.

So I drilled an Asolute Inferno  14lbs, drilled 1:30 label... and let me tell you something.   It is effortless to set up my break point, and the ball carries very well.  I think I am gonna drill 3 more 14lbs balls and see what happens,

SO FAR ITS UNBELIEVABLE... ITS SO EASY TO READ MY BREAK POINT AND ROLL THAT PERFECT BALL, plus I get a little more distance, allowing y ball to set up hard and really yank to the hole.

For me the control was amazing, and the release utterly effortless.

It also made it easy to hold a shot and ride the dry line alot longer, making it easier to hold that high in the pocket strike that carries the corners well.

I see now how the pros are pulling this off... Anyone with decent speed and great hand can stroke this ball to there break point again and again, helping them score way better, and with less effort.

Its crazy how one pound can change the entire game for the better...

I just did the same thing. I have been using a 15# Vapor Zone. While in Reno, at the National Bowling Stadium, I bought a 14# Rampage. The driller there shortened my span by about one half an inch. Since our house no longer has a driller, has never had an experienced driller, I accepted his recommendation.

Last night, post-bowling for my Sunday league, I was struggling in the second game with the VZ. I pulled the Rampage out and proceeded to throw 8 strikes in a row with it.

I can't say yet if it was the ball, the drilling or another reason but something worked.

Just got back... rolled  279  227  266  256  247  235 for six games.

Shot was fresh oil 35 feet.

I used a 14lb. Absolute Inferno.

But the main difference is the ease at which I bowl.

Many pros throw 14lbs, and now I can see why.

"Many pro's throw 14 pounds"

Where did you come up with this? Most pro's throw 15, some 16 (Norm Duke being one of them). I know of no PBA touring players that throw 14lbs. On the Sr. Tour there are some but not on the regular tour.

I stepped down to 14 pounds briefly last year and on a THS (walled) with snappy backends I did quite well, but add some serious carry down and you'll begin to see one soft ten after another. The same applies to PBA and tournament conditions. I'm not saying that one can't excel with 14 pound equipment (many LPBT players threw 14 pounds) but in the final analysis you're overall carry and options when switching lines will be somewhat limited. Still, if the lighter weight maintains a more consistent release and minimizes fatigue, etc, then the advantages probably outweigh the disadvantages.

Norm Duke DOES NOT throw a 14 pound ball. In fact, it's beem widely publicized that although he is the shortest in stature of the touring pro he's one of few that throws a 16 pound ball.

I'll tell ya what, I'll e-mail Danny Weisman and get a definitive answer on how many Pro's throw a 14 pound ball just to put these baseless claims to rest.

Here's what Danny Weisman responded with when asked about any touring players using 14 pound equipment:

"None that I know of............Duke uses 16 and it's about 50/50 for the guys on tour.....15/16lbs.......dw"

I rest my case.

I think the only person out on tour this year to use 14 lb equipment was Brian Kretzer, and as you all know, he didn't make it look too good.
