I am guessing that it tames the ball enough to use on less than the heaviest of oil conditions, yet will grab the lane a little better and not have as sharp of a breakpoint as the Smokin. But I thought I would ask rather than guess.

They recommended polish in this month's Bowler's journal. Joey said that all 3 testers got better results from the ball polished and it was still earlier than the strike zone, but smoother at the break.
The Smokin is much longer and much sharper at the break.

Thanks, that makes sense to me.
Though it sparks another question, polished up, will the Scorchin still handle carry down well?

After all, the SCI and SI have different coverstocks - besides being solid & pearl, these will react differently. You will not replace a SCI with a SI et v. v., just by sanding/polishing it. Besides, surface adjustment is a must to adapt the ball and its reaction to the individual style.
