Smash/r and Bruiser can't be that different...
« on: January 03, 2004, 08:43:24 AM »
I got to thinking about something.  The smash/r and Bruiser are pretty much the same ball.  Yeah, the cores are different but not that different.  Here are the numbers to back me up:

Smash/r--2.53--.041
Bruiser--2.50--.043

Both share the famous Powerkoil 18 cover.  If drilled the same way, with the SAME finish they would be within a board of each other I am sure.  In a recent email for Tom Tomaras, he said

"Hi Andrew

This ball could replace your Danger Zone ..... both have the same
cover stocks ..... your old Zone may  be full
of oil and than the Bruiser would be stronger and earlier than your old
Zone .... So I would pin it the same ..... and test them together and see
just how much differance you can see .... 1- 4 boards ..... maybe
......does that justifies carrying
I would not carry both ..... you could pin them different but still they
are the same cover stock ..... remember 75 % of the balls total reaction
comes from the cover stock .....

call me if you have any  more  questions ....

Thanks"

Anyone have thoughts on this theory??

andrew

I see that bowlersdream.com has the Smash/r on the closeout page. Is that a sign that it's being discontinued or something? I've been wondering how long Brunswick will keep it around being that close to the Bruiser.

Not real sure but funny you bring up this topic. I JUST picked up my Bruiser and my SlayR today and MAN if it is anywhere NEAR the bruiser, its an awesome ball. Actually first game I threw with it was my 2nd ever 200 game (215 to let u know)

I don't have the Smash/R, but I have the Bruiser, Time Zone, and a Fire Quantum. The Fire Quantum is the same STRONG pearly-looking PK18 cover as the Smash/R, although red instead of blue. The Bruiser looks more like a hybrid coverstock. The black portion is solid PK18 and the blue looks pearlized. The Bruiser is essentially the same RG (2.50 vs. 2.51 for the Fire Quantum), has slightly more differential (.043 vs. .032), and mine are drilled close enough to each other to be the same:

With the factory finish on both balls, I remember the Bruiser to be just a tiny bit more arcy and even rolling than the Fire Quantum. The Fire Quantum just naturally wanted to be a bit more angular, probably due to the higher flare making the Bruiser start up a bit earlier. Going with their inherent nature, I polished the Fire Quantum and removed some polish from the Bruiser. I just keep the Bruiser clean with Track's Clean n' Smooth. I rarely throw the Bruiser - the FQ works better in my home center. I can't imagine the Bruiser being a skid-snap type of ball with any surface. The Smash/R I can't comment on. However, if you're looking for an arc type ball go with the Bruiser. For anything more angular grab a Time Zone! I'm also getting a nice reaction with a mellow drilled Time Zone:

This one is turning into a premier 'control ball'. With surface tweeks you can keep it in play just about anywhere. There's just something about that Powerkoil 18 cover.

The SmashR, according to a Brunswick techie, is a combo of solid Blue PK 18 and a pearlized silver PK 18. (In this matter, it is just like the Turbo Diesel and the Thing.) If you polish it, like a teammate did, you will see the silver part sparkle in the light. It is easy to re-dull, if so desired.

The Brusier's Quantum core would seem to have a tendency to make the PK 18 coverstock less flippy. My Fire Quantm is not at all a flippy ball, which surprised me. I am not sure if it's because of the drilling (pin over the ring finger and CG 1/2" in the negative for a 5" x 5.5", 105 degree drilling. I have not touched the cover at all.

RandyO,

Brunswick told me the Fire Quantum's RG Differential is relatively low, .032, which is lower than the base Bruiser's RG Diff of .043. I guess flare will depend on how you drilled yours. FQ could get more than the Bruiser.

I also like my FQ a lot; haven't used in a while; dug it out for yesterday's tournament but didn't use it again, since there wasn't enough oil.

My little brother got a Bruiser and it raised his average from a 155 to a 171. Of course he went up two pounds, but the ball hits like a truck with great backend. Now, after seeing this, I got myself a Smash/r and it moves twice as much as the Bruiser. But, there is a hugh difference between the way he bowls, and the way I bowl. I weigh 200 lbs and can crank the hell out of it so I really couldnt compare the two. They are both great balls wither way.
