Let's not forget about Columbia, Inc, who left behind and fired many many more workers in the last year of being in business. No severance packages, just "see ya!"

There are only so many jobs in a community to go around. If the people who lost the jobs at Brunswick all go to the mall and take those jobs, then the people who would have went to the mall to get a job now cant. Wake up.

A few years ago I was making a living as a machinist. Laid off because of foreign competition. China. Could have moved to China. Naa- I'll just stay here. Changed careers. Respiratory healthcare. Like it better... The Brunswick employees that were "handle pullers" can find other jobs. Other careers. Determination. They will be fine. Go back to school with severance pay. That is a deal!

Oh stop. Bowling is small business in the real world of things. Now you are comparing wants to needs of America, get real and zip it.

Maybe if those americans were educated they wouldnt need to worry about keeping their jobs.

Hey megamav you made a good point but wait a minute what happens to those who are not born with a silver spoon in their mouth and their families can not afford to send them to college? Maybe they can apply for student loans assistance but wait a minute those programs are getting harder to be approved for. Why because the amount of money being supplied to those programs have been cut back. Any guess why the funding is not there?

On edit maybe you should open your eyes megamav.

OK So maybe Darwin has an idea and way to keep America solvent and strong.
Face it America is in trouble and granted brunswick moving to Mexico is just an example but if we as Americans don't make a stand this country is not going to be a nice place to live in the future for us let alone for our children and grandchildren.

Adapt or die, its a simple concept thats spanned across most aspects of life for eons. Domestic policy is there to help balance the economy. If you were a smart man, you'd be buying stock now, instead of festering over this small bump in the economy. The housing fears will subside with some cuts in the interest rate.

I know it was posted a while back, but Brunswick tried to accomodate those employees that were let go. Brunswick offered training in any field in which they chose to pursue after Brunswick, and most were offered positions at the Reynoso plant if they chose to move, which I assume none/few did.

Sure, im sure they were scorned and took the cold hard axe when Brunswick was trying to be more than accommodating by offering a severance package that included investing in their future or offering a position at an alternate location/line of business.

Brunswick isnt a cold company when it comes to its employees or the United States. They made a business decision, so Brunswick Bowling can adapt and survive in this ever changing world.

Mayhaps you have the gov't confused with Brunswick.

As for the future, who knows?

I can tell you this......If Muskegon falls apart, because of Brunswick, I will let you know ASAP.

Until then, I will show up to my Wed. night league, throwing Brunswick.

Detroit Free Press had an article about Volkswagen moving it's HQ out of Michigan - something about getting away from the "stigma" of Detroit and Michigan.  That's another 1000 jobs lost.  There was a list of other companies that recently left the state (such as Kmart) - Brunswick didn't make the list.

Also heard that the Detroit area has a large number of vacant houses.

Don't really understand it myself.  The few times that I've visited the state of Michigan I was really impressed.

With everything I've read and seen, cost of living in Michigan seems to be very reasonable.  I don't know if the state lacks an educated job base or what, but I would think that companies would want to move there.  The conditions sound right for a cheaper work force.

They say that VW was moving it's HQ to Northern Virginia.  I know first hand that living in that area is expensive.  Finding qualified employees is going to cost them a pretty penny.
