Vapor Zone ! Not doing well.
« on: March 05, 2006, 09:25:13 PM »
Last week was league night and I planned on using my vapor zone. It would be the first time I bowled with it on wood so I tried it out there. And after about 7 or 8 frames, the ball spent the rest of the night in my bag. Not happy with the reaction I am getting. Plus worst of all, The ball is tracking over the thumbhole and making a loud noise down the lane. Sounds like something is using a houseball.  Normally I clip the thumbhole on most of my balls, but this was hitting the thumbhole for most of the lane. I get a very mild ball reaction and very little (if any) back end reaction.

I pulled out my "the one" and paradigm and did great. Can someone tell me what I need to do with this ball? Plug and redrill? An X-hole? or just cave in and sell the damn thing?

FYI   The ball is 16 lbs with a 1 3/4 inch pin. I have a picture of the drilling attached.http://i50.photobucket.com/albums/f308/nissan02/vz1.jpg

I would maybe move the pin right of ring and give that a try. It may move your track away from your thumb, and get a better reaction overall.

Without scaling the ball it almost looks like you are close to an ounce or more of positive side weight. A weight hole should help you raise the track. A good place to drill one that helps to "raise" the track is in the thumb/side quadrant.

Draw a line from the center of the grip over and up/down to your axis point. Draw a line down the VAL(vertical axis line)approx 3-3 1/2". Draw a line thru the pin and cg down until you intersect the VAL. This should be a good place to place the weight hole. You want to increase the flare separation, so drill the hole deep enough to hit the core(about 3"). Increasing the flare separation will get the ball flaring more wider and will change the reaction to a more stronger one.

Give it a try, it beats selling it right away. PM me and let me know how things work out.

BigMike's suggestion is your best bet without plugging it and starting over. It would also be best if you or your ball driller knew your PAP. If you normally have a high track, especially if it's close to the fingers, you should try and keep the pin up above your ring finger or more right. It could be that you're getting the pin to close to your track and the bowtie of your flare rings is also too low down. The higher up the pin, the better chance you have of raising that bowtie up. The extra hole idea, like Mike said, will help flare the ball off the thumb hole quicker.

One other thing. I can't see where your mass bias locator pin is in the picture, but it too could be too close towards your track. Based on the location of the pin and the cg in the picture, I would assume that the MB is also a few inches right of the thumb, which would be alright, but it is not always guaranteed that the pin, cg, and MB are in line like that.

Hope some of this helps,

That's where I would start!

Getting the pin in a flare-safe zone is the responsibility of the ball driller! Knowing the bowler's PAP, and their general style is a must!
